Diskotopia continues the momentum of 2019 with a bracing and weighty single from Memotone; the Bristol-based multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer William Yates. Previously releasing music on labels such as Black Acre, Bedouin and Project Mooncircle, Memotone performs live with a full hardware-based setup and also records under different aliases such as Halfnelson. For his debut on Diskotopia, Memotone serves up two broken dubwise abstractions that glisten brilliantly like gemstones mined from the label’s existing subconscious. Yates notes that “organic growth” was a driving force in the creation of these two pieces, and the twisting nodes of the venation storytelling unfurl like entwined vines and branches.

Leading off with ‘Luaka,’ Memotone melds modern and classical instruments together in a sultry Fourth World fusion that takes its cues equally from Tarkovsky cinema as it does from Asian minimalist composition. Synthetic atmospherics, submerged spring-reverb percussion, no-wave bass and funk clavichord playfully interweave, whilst the textures and timbres of clarinet and guzheng create lingering drones and droplets, like a moisture left hanging in the air. The result feels like an illusory Kitaro-inspired Jon Hassell, Labradford and Dabyre collaborative portrait of a Sino-tropical known unknown. A mesmerizing and welcome seven-minute-thirty-four-second deliverance from our collective material existence.

Drawing inspiration from classic 60s and 70s Jamaican productions, ‘Sidewise Dub’ is a prime demonstration of how Memotone can utilize his mixing desk as an instrument to forge a shimmering chamber of soundsystem microstudy. Fractal dub chords ricochet while modulated hi-hats ping like the propellers of lost airships coasting through the Bermuda Triangle; all the while awash with undulating pads and heaving sub bass. Forlorn synth melodies chart a path through these torrential sonics that are certain to leave residue long after dissipation.

The inimitable DJ T. steps up to Get Physical Music label with monstrous new house single, 'Move Your Body.' 

DJ T. is a titan of the scene, co-founder of this label, journalist and encyclopedia of electronic music knowledge. From his club-ready singles to his more adventurous and immersive albums via side projects like his Mathami alias, he never stops evolving and helping to define the underground sound of now. He now follows up his last single 'Rapture' on this label back in November with another fresh cut. 

The superb 'Move Your Body' is a bubbling house cut with warm, soft-focus synth patterns rising up through the mix. The paddy drums swing low and roll to catchy effect while filtered vocals add some human soul. A new and pixelated lead takes over later on to really ensure the crowd goes to the next level. 

DJ T. has cooked up a summer anthem in the making with 'Move Your Body.'

ESS is excited to bring to you our first set from the Creative Audio Archive's Artist Mixtape Series... The first mix comes from Lia Kohl!

This playlist is organized around unlabelled tapes in the Sun Ra archive. In addition to many rehearsal, performance, and lecture recordings, there are a few tapes in the archive that aren't easily categorizable -- a collection of recordings of a voicemail machine, or a series of short synth improvisations, for example. I have a special love of uncategorizable things, so I gravitated towards these tapes particularly, including selections from the aforementioned two, as well as a tape that seems to be Ra tuning through the radio and occasionally singing along. The voicemail tape is actually recordings of voicemails left for Alton Abraham, Sun Ra's manager and good friend. I love the refrain of his most frequent caller -- "Ham pick up, pick up Ham" -- and the drama that unfolds with so little context. I'm drawn to the synth recordings because Ra seems to be truly experimenting: stopping and starting at places before finding a new pattern. I love to think of this larger-than-life man having a quiet moment in the studio by himself. On side A of the "radio poem" tape, you can hear Ra improvising words over the radio, but on side B (which I've included almost in its entirety), he only occasionally sings along. Instead of feeling like a piece, it just feels like we're listening to the radio together. The only edit I made in that recording is to cut short Hotel California -- even if Sun Ra wants to listen to that, I don't.


I also included some selections from the Malachi Ritscher collection: Mamadou Diabate Ensemble at Eli's Cheesecake World (this place still exists!), Rob Mazurek with an ensemble in 2005, and Milford Graves at the Empty Bottle. I love the aliveness of these recordings: that we can hear Graves running around the space with a whistle and some bells, people whooping as he passes; that the Diabate Ensemble's incredible playing is punctuated by children crying. Music is in space and time and real people are listening, then and now. 


In a similar vein: ESS recently uncovered a tape of Fela Kuti live at the Riviera, which I've included a few cuts of. It's really cool to hear Kuti live, but somehow equally wonderful to hear the unknown recordist offering a light to a friend. Which is to say that these recordings remind me that music is something that happens between people, and this playlist is about celebrating that.
