Next up on the @idlecellars mix series we have the legendary Phil Mison. One of my favourite DJ’s (and humans) his history alone is enough to warrant anyone’s respect but his music truly speaks for itself. I’m delighted to offer this exquisite journey from someone I consider to be an unsung hero of sorts. Certainly a hero of mine. He was there from day one. Some history here for those that don’t know his roots, in his own words…

“Cafe Del Mar opened in 1980, but never had a resident dj until José Padilla started  in 1991. I'd heard him play there that year and bought some tapes from him. I didn't go back in 92 but made a couple of tapes that a friend went out and gave him, similar stuff to what he was playing. Later that year i met him in Tag records in soho. He remembered the tapes and i invited him along to the Milk Bar where i was resident at the time. 

In early march 1993, José had an offer to go and DJ in asia and asked me if i wanted to cover for him at the Café Del Mar while he was away. Of course i said yes and a couple of weeks later he turned up at the Milk Bar with plane tickets and the keys to his house. I flew out at the end of March and played every day until the first week of May. I returned to London as i still had my residency at the Milk Bar and other gigs at the Ministry & Gardening Club. I went back for my birthday in September, played a couple more times and just hung out listening to music. 

José returned to London later that year for the winter. He asked if i wanted to be resident with him for the whole summer of 1994. I flew out late may and stayed until late september. I met quite a few people out there that year including Paul Daley, which led me onto becoming Leftfields tour DJ in 1996. Also Kennneth Bager, Harvey and a few others that are still good friends today.” Enjoy friends 🐬

Next up in our Record Club Guest Mix series are Sanctuary, the moniker of Ben and Liam, a DJ duo from Australia who have been living in Berlin for the past 9 years. You may be familiar with their 'Life Classics' project. It started as an output for their own edits then later branched out into a mix series and club residency at OHM in Berlin.

Their mix landed in our inbox and from the get-go we knew it was destined for the Record Club series. Covering many spectrums of soul, it masterfully glides through tempos and unleashes a quiet storm inside you. Not ones to fear a vocal, it's stuffed full of soaring voices, sweet strings and the tightest grooves. An extended blend done right!

The guys pulled from of a couple of record bags and served it up on 1210’s at their Berlin base. As they described it "back to back burgers, boozas and records all the way". 

The mix is loaded with many of their favourites and a few dusty ones from the back of their shelves. Look out for cuts from Reggie S, Stage Coach, Edwynn Page and Herby Charles. It's packed with winners, some you knew, some you do now. A real steppers' delight.

"Dirty Water" is a sprawling, hypnotic afrobeat anthem from Russell Nomer that channels the raw, revolutionary energy of 1970s Nigeria. A powerful statement on inequality and social justice, the track is built on a relentless, driving groove in the tradition of Fela Kuti & Africa 70.
From the moment the shekere and drums lock in, the track builds into an unstoppable force. Funky, interlocking guitars and a gritty Farfisa organ lay the foundation before a powerful 5-piece horn section erupts with the song's defiant main theme.
The vocals, delivered in a raw, half-sung Nigerian Pidgin English, are a powerful call to action. Nomer's lead vocal cuts through the mix with urgency, trading fiery call-and-response lines with a soulful female chorus. The lyrics paint a stark picture of a society where the powerful thrive while the people suffer, a universal message delivered with unapologetic intensity.
This 120 BPM instrumental epic features an extended, psychedelic Farfisa organ solo and a blistering, passionate tenor sax solo, showcasing the sheer musicality and improvisational fire of the ensemble. The track culminates in a powerful chant before slowly fading out on the infectious groove, leaving the listener with a sense of both struggle and hope.
Recorded with a raw, live, analog feel, "Dirty Water" is more than a song—it's a political statement and a polyrhythmic journey.

Dirty Water

Emma-Jean Thackray is an award-winning London based jazz trumpeter, flugel player and producer. She has recently received the Emerging Excellence award from Help Musicians.

She brings fresh ideas to the music by fusing experimental beats and deep brass grooves of her Walrus EP, one of Bandcamp’s top jazz releases of 2016. We invited her down to audiophile venue Brilliant Corners at the end of last summer to show us some of her favourite records.
