Launched in 1995, Manifesto was an imprint set up by Mercury Records as a club music imprint. Spearheaded by Eddie Gordon, Luke Neville, Ben Cherrill and Judge Jules, the label would go on to be a seminal player in the House and Trance fields over the following 12 years.

Inbetween the years of 1997 and 2002, singles released on the label often came with a distinctive cover art design seemingly inspired by Rorschach inkblot tests, in a variety of colours. After picking up a couple of singles that had this cover art, I decided I was going to try and collect every single one that featured a variant of it. In the process, I uncovered a number of gems that, though of their time, still mostly hold up- if anything, that they are all so clearly produced during that time period is a strength.

This mix is by no means comprehensive- there are still a couple of singles I'm missing, and I didn't want to put too many mixes of the same songs in here- but it does cover a lot of ground. I sincerely hope you enjoy it.

Can I Borrow These? - 97-02: A Manifesto Tribute Mix

"Wait, wasn't the opening music titled Caledfwlch?" Yeah, it was; I changed that songs title to Carnwennan, and repurposed Caledfwlch for this. Why? Because Caledfwlch is the Welsh name for Excalibur, King Arthur's sword, whereas Carnwennan is the Welsh name attributed to one of his daggers. Short song = Dagger, long song = Sword, is the logic.

Why exactly am I using Welsh names for King Arthur's weaponry- or indeed, using King Arthur's weaponry in song titles at all? What is the symbolism here? I dunno. Sometimes we do shit because it sounds cool, and that's enough. I suppose there is a delicious irony in using them considering the good guy stable of BM2 is literally called the Kingslayers, but hey ho.

Anyway; quite proud of this one, now that its finally come together. I struggled a lot with the staff roll/ending tune for this- literal weeks if not a couple months of trying different concepts entirely, to constantly trying different things out with the concept sketch that became this tune, before it finally began to come together. I was seriously burned out on Battlemania 2.1 as a whole for a minute there- hence briefly shifting focus to create Microcomputer- and it was beginning to get me really down. So to have managed to pull something I'm this happy with out of something that was driving me absolutely fucking insane is nothing short of a victory as far as I'm concerned.
