In the mid 2000s the very Northern/Midlands centric and quite protective scene of early Bassline was opened up to new styles creeping in at the margins from UKG and Grime.. This cross pollination caused a sudden shift in production styles along with the proliferation of new DAW software such as Reason. 

This style came to be known as 4x4 Basssline confusingly.. seeing as all Bassline is 4 on the floor and "4x4" is a general term for UKG which isn't 2 Step or breakbeat orientated.

Either way as a late teen this sound absolute blew my mind as it felt like (and still sometimes does) UK music from the future.
