Before Spectrum or Future there was the The Project Club, first in Ibiza and then in Streatham, South London. This was the club that Trevor Fung got going on his return from Ibiza. This mix is a selection of trax circa 1988 and recorded as a tribute to the club.

A part of the mid-'80s London soul scene with his friend Jazzie B (Soul II Soul), Kid Batchelor began working in house tracks  during his DJ sets at the legendary Hedonism club nights. In the late '80s he recorded with Keith Franklin (KCC) as Bang the Party.

Heart on my sleeve now, But for me, DiY were always at their best on their second or third night in. this recording lives up to the spirit of this and is just incredible. 6 hours and still going strong. what more can yo ask for. Cafe Rene 22-11-14 DK & Woosh (Alice's Bday) PT2

Another moment from the DJ Paulette archives and unavailable anywhere else - including the Radio1 website.  Not sure if that means it was rubbish though so you can make your own mind up.  The concept behind this mix - because believe it or not I thought long and hard about it - was to represent musically exactly who I was and how I had got to be included on the Essential Mix roster.  Deep, latin, disco, soulful and downright funky house nestles alongside pure funk and disco classics.  It was supposed to represent the movement in a club from the back room to the main room but also provided a bit of a biog background including music from Talkin Loud (I represented Roni Size & Reprazents, Nuyorican Soul and Terri Callier and the house sounds of Manifesto records, A&M, Virgin etc at the time when I DJ'ed by night and w orked by day in PR for Mercury Records. Artists including Armand Van Helden, Daft Punk, Ultra Naté feature alongside Unlimited Touch, Slick, Patrice Rushen, Muzique, Ten City, LaTour, BeBe Winans, Roger Sanchez, Eddie Amador, Roy Ayers, Cevin Fisher, It also is a fine example of the sort of 'block party' sets I was renowned for playing at the Zap Club in Brighton, Bagleys, The Cross and The Ministry of Sound in London, Flesh Club at the Hacienda in Manchester, Amnesia, Privilege and Cafe Mambo in Ibiza and anywhere else I deigned to turn up and play records whilst also being fashionably on point.  Sadly I don't have a playlist for this mix, can't find one anywhere online either which is a shame as there are some beauties on there that I'd like to get the titles for myself.  It was mixed on two Technics 1210s, an embarrassingly rude Gemini two channel mixer and is (as was the norm in 1998) a CD and MP3 free zone - it does have some acetates on there though - hence the occasional timing slippage as those things were heavy and hell to cue up.  This is how it was for me in 1998.   It is admittedly a bit rough in places but everybody's gotta learn sometime and 13 years later I'm still proud of it and happy to have found it. It's fusion and funk - with a badass bassline. Enjoy.
