Sigmund Freud wrote how The Mystic Writing Pad was an excellent metaphor for how human consciousness operates. Its three layers represent the senses' protective filter, Freud's perception-consciousness (Pcp-Cns), and memory. In his short 1924 article, Freud talks about trying to find a memory aid that reflects how human consciousness works but finds that paper receives only once, and chalk has no permanence.
