Hey this is Skwirl here to gab at you briefly about the records we have coming for this year’s thematic cluster! The theme is Nostalgic Wavs and each record has been linked to a concept under the rather large umbrella of nostalgia as a function of emotional attachment to memory.

The third record in Nostalgic Wavs is Adam Gillett’s sublime LP “Rising Despite Circumstances” which is our ‘rückkehrunruhe’ selection.

Rückkehrunruhe is the sensation of coming back from an immersive journey, finding it slipping already from memory as if it was all a dream, or literally translated to “coming back restlessness”. We’ve categorised it as Reflective, Present; Knowing under the Wist profile on our Nostalgic Wavs map.

Australian born, London based artist Adam Gillett is no stranger to taking listeners on deep excursions. He’s dropped some records on a small handful of labels here and there before starting his own imprint Final Future which has seen him serve up a stream of groovy, sultry, and his signature wonkiness infused tech house singles aimed squarely at smashing the dance floor. “Rising Despite Circumstances”, his first LP, however, opens a window to very different vistas.

Sure many of the tracks feel right at home on the floor but this LP is much more than just ephemeral system heaters, it is an intimately personal and uplifting homage to the beauty of life. This is a collection of blossoms unfolding upward toward clear skies, inner warmth, and radiant bliss and the tracks shimmer along a deft line: both stripped back with restraint as well as cheekily expansive as soulful vocal samples dance around top notch synth work and incredible groove craft.

“Rising Despite Circumstances” is far more nuanced and personable than just a collection of bangers - this is a cinematic and quite often arrestingly tender record full of dynamic organic energy: all underpinned by a good heart, an earnest grin and a barefoot boogie in the sunset. It is an immersive journey well worth going on and leaves one eager to restart just as the fleeting memories of its presence inevitably begin to fade.

It’s a side of Adam that even those familiar with his work have yet to see and I could not be more honoured and deeply proud to present this record on Woodland Creatures.
