Morphine is a song in two halves it begins with classical piano and Carson’s almost crooner-styled vocal before morphing into an electronic-tinged dreamscape reminiscent of James Blake where electronic drums, guitar, bass, double bass is weaved with synth sounds created from orchestral samples. Ironically for such a richly textured, experimental genre-shifting track it explores a theme of boredom, the first half inspired again by Charles Baudelaire who claimed that the greatest misery is boredom. 

The second halve comes from a deeply personal place, inspired by Carson’s experience of his wife’s illness and being taken to hospital and put on the morphine for her pain. As Carson explains “Throughout all the pain that you go through of having a loved one with an illness one of the biggest things we talked about was boredom. Bored of being ill.
Bored of feeling a certain way. Bored of feeling trapped by your own body.”
