The old adage "they don't make them like they used to" might seem trite; however, it certainly applies to Belgian producer Pole Folder. During the 2000s, his knack for delivering epic and soaring productions that immersed you into a world of narrative was unparalleled. Listen to the amazing "Apollo Vibes" (alongside CP); it is intricate yet feels huge, unfolding its themes with the confidence of a master magician. All that craft ensured his music being featured on prominent US TV shows (Nip/Tuck, CSI) and movies (2002’s "Stark Raving Mad"). 

Today, Pole Folder is still acknowledged as a versatile performer who continues to tour globally, bringing his intricate studio creations to life with live vocals and various instruments he has mastered since childhood. Here, the veteran does not disappoint. Featuring tracks from Fort Romeau, Marsh, Rodriguez Jr., and, of course, Pole Folder himself, this is a deep, 2-hour progressive excursion filled with many emotional vocal cuts and introspective moments.

An Appeal To The Imagination

I became acquainted with Housemusic during the early 1990’s. Back then there were two flavors. Hard or Mellow, that’s it. I liked almost everything. The DJ was not very important because he or she played often somewhere in a corner, but often played mind blowing! Back then, DJ’s had a hidden star status, because it was mainly about the people on the dance floor who could dance, jump and go crazy with an open mind and feeling completely free. Is was them who made the party! I was a real party animal and witnessed the evolution of the House. It was fantastic and I never wanted to miss it for the world.   
 
Arround 1995, more and more sub-genres entered the world of electronic dancemusic. Now there was Garage, Deephouse, Clubhouse, Techhouse, Progressive, Techno and Trance. This is the period that I became interested in the DJ-ing myself. I wanted to spin some records myself so I bought my first pair of turntables and a cheap mixer and started buying records. 
I dragged myself through Amsterdam in search of unique 12-inches and special promo’s. Those where pretty cool years in my life. 

Especially the social aspect, being together, the conviviality in record stores, the smell and the artwork of vinyl. That was unique, and no MP3 file can compete with that. I still miss those days. People who have never used vinyl are really missing out on an extra dimension when it comes to DJing. 

It took a while before I could play anywhere, because mixing with vinyl requires different skills than mixing on CDJ’s or the Easy DJ-Controllers from today. 

Later that period I played in different places, often at underground parties and in cafes. My style was very variable from House to Techno, to Progressive House and even for a short period some Trance. But to me it all just called House! The mother of all electronic Dance music. The sound that I still hold very dear to this day.  

Around 1999 I stopped partying. I wanted to grow socially and in the society. It was time to take some responsibility. That was not possible with the many parties I did. I also stopped spinning and buying records until 2005 
Between 2005 and 2010 did a weekly radio show in Leiden on weekends. I reconnected with old friends with a radio station. Many people from the sub-top in the DJ scene in Holland played their sets, all for the passion. At the time, social media was No big deal and far less important as it is today.  It was real underground and amazing. 
 
Today I prefer to play music with different flavors of House. It doesn't matter, if it fits and it can be done, then I think it's good. It's all about the moment that you share and feel together, it’s not about the planning. I prefer to play longer sets to build up a good vibe.  

In my opinion, a really good DJ is someone who dares to take risks and play from the heart, creatively deciding on the spot which track is next, not committing to those 20 safe tracks with the same key. That sounds nice, but lacks spirituality and inspiration, and it is so predictable.

People who have been an inspiration for me; DJ Per ( my all-time DJ hero from Amsterdam), DJ Dimitri (Amsterdam) , DJ Erick E ( Amsterdam) , Carl Cox, Sven Väth, Laurent Garnier, Danny Howels, Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Sasha, John Digweed, DJ Koze, King Britt, Jimpster, Marco Carola, Mark Knight, Hernan Cattaneo, and probably a few more I'm forgetting now...
