Mesa Babe found the phrase carved into the back wall of an abandoned studio in Los Angeles, "RUN IT BACK". The place was once a recording hub in the 1970s, known for producing a string of soul and funk artists who all shared one eerie connection: every single one of them vanished within a year of their final session.

When the band moved in, the studio hadn’t been touched in decades. The control boards were still wired, the walls still lined with decaying soundproof foam, and a single tape machine sat in the corner with a label that read simply “Do Not Rewind.” Naturally, they did.

The tape began with a normal jam session... bass, drums, faint chatter.... Then the laughter turned strained. The sound distorted, slowed, reversed. By the end, the reel hissed with a deep, droning hum that didn’t stop even when the tape did.

They sampled a section for what became Run It Back, layering the warped groove into the track. But during mixing, playback would stutter without warning, looping a single bar for minutes, always the same words, whispered under the static:
You asked for it back.

Abigail said the song felt alive, like the tape was rewriting itself every time they replayed it. Addison noticed the lights flicker whenever the chorus hit, and the same phrase would appear in random places, backstage walls, mirror condensation, even in their notes.

Then came the shows. Every time they performed Run It Back, something repeated: the same malfunction in the soundboard, the same lights cutting out, the same audience member fainting.

Someone once said that music is a loop, the past replaying itself through us. But Run It Back isn’t nostalgia. It’s the past demanding to be heard again, no matter what it costs.

And now, when the band hits replay, they swear they can hear the faint laughter of the missing musicians in the background, right where the tape first began.
