‘Soap Opera’ is the first single to be taken from Mesadorm’s new album ‘Pollinator’ to be released on 8th April 2022. 3 years in the making, this music has been through 3 producers, 1 near fatal incident and a worldwide pandemic. Front woman Blythe Pepino now taking the reins with production, this album is a melting pot of inventive catchy tune-ery, embodying something not dissimilar to the simplicity of the lowly love song before sweeping sweetly into a barrage of anti-establishment cacophony. All of which is painstakingly clear from the very opening of ‘Soap Opera’;

“Soap Opera is the court jester. An overt and sarcastic expression of my rage and depression at being an English person after realising that I have no pride in that part of my identity at all. I wanted to write a song about what I really think of this country, at this moment, in a way I could just about get away with…because we (and more of us than we think) are blinded by an old reputation of power and righteousness. That’s the scary bit. I don't think enough people really, deeply believe that we could be headed to overt, rather than disguised, fascism because we have this idea of ourselves as saviours - our national identity bleeds into our individual identities which we want to be generally ‘good’. So, in this tune I enjoy poking that nerve. It’s time that we are able to see ourselves for who we really are so that change can happen” - Blythe Pepino

After composing and producing original songs for the Netflix show ‘The Irregulars’ and working on a cover by Sam Brooks, (self-produced release ‘Numb’), Blythe Pepino took charge of production duties in early 2021, a choice that has created an incredibly unique piece of work. In Soap Opera, you can hear a perhaps ‘irreverent’ (Pepino) approach to the treatments of synths and vocals that come from a more unaffected place, landing itself firmly in the realm of Lo-Fi without losing any of the technical intricacies that Mesadorm have personified in the past. The playful meaning and intention behind the sound created by Mesadorm when they composed the essence of ‘Pollinator’ in 2018 has not been lost, but enhanced and encouraged to shine through leading towards a bolder element of truth wrapped up in a nice warm blanket of familiar nostalgia.

Recorded live with a simple piano and vocal arrangement in the church in Eype, Dorset, where PJ Harvey recorded 'Let England Shake', 'The Joy It Joins Us Up' is written for front-woman Blythe Pepino’s ex-partner. This song is taken from upcoming acoustic album 'Epicadus' which will be released in April 2019.

This single is inspired by The Leap Manifesto (now called The Leap) and the words of political titan Naomi Klein in her rallying book ‘No Is Not Enough’. At the time of penning the song, Blythe  was finishing Klein’s book and reeling from the release of the IPCC’s 2018 special report. A landmark report, it detailed like never before the extent of the climate and ecological crisis driven by human systems. Two years on it now seems fitting for Mesadorm to make their song public in the midst of a global pandemic that has exposed the weakness and injustice of these systems yet again. The Leap Manifesto - which was so inspiring to Pepino that she wrote the song immediately - makes it clear that these multiple crises are all part of the same story. And the message is joyous! There is a much more beautiful world waiting for us to Leap to, if we rewild our imaginations and join together to believe in it.
