A curated series where we commission artists to make a mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce and what they listen to.

This mix was recorded live at SOMMERLIGHTS at Dark Matter Berlin on Fri 28th July 2023. 

Max Cooper blurs the lines between genres, fusing elements of techno, ambient, drum and bass and experimental. With an unparalleled ability to captivate audiences, he seamlessly weaves intricate layers of sound that transcend the dancefloor.

Nils Frahm Boiler Room x Dimensions Opening Concert Live Set

I love playing music set to visuals. Usually it's set to my video collaborations for my live shows, but this time I got to DJ amongst Christopher Bauder's light installation at Dark Matter in Berlin to create an audio-visual conversation. 

The audience in Berlin is amazing too, being the magnet for electronic music people that it is, and not being one of the historic clubs there with their specific musical identity to integrate with, this was anything goes and just feeding on the energy in the room. And there was a lot of energy in the room, as you can hear in the mix. 

I let loose pretty much…. It’s a club set, how I'm into club sets, at least. With some new unheard things in there and lots of old favourites from over the years.

Celebrating their second album after ten years, Kiasmos’ Janus Rasmussen offers a veritable who’s who of kindred spirits in the global club scene with his mix for Bleep. From soft piano led compositions to four to the floor techno, orchestral whispers and gliding synths, and emotive club action are the name of the game here, evidenced in the smooth flows and bright, crackling garage rhythms of Gryr’s ‘Letter’, or the moody sonics of Gidge’s ‘The Fells’ reverberating into lush, crisp Nordic air. Bleep Mix #284 - Janus Rasmussen (Kiasmos)

I've been listening to Essential mixes since I first started getting into clubs and electronic music, so it was a shock, and exciting for me, to get the offer to make one myself. The two hour format really allows some time to explore ideas musically as well.

So bringing everything together, I decided to try and make it an exploration of everything that has made me so obsessed with electronic music for the last 20 years, with some of my favourite records from the mid 90's, unreleased material from my favourite artists like Nils Frahm, Lusine, Tim Hecker and Rob Clouth, and a range of genres from ambient to 90 bpm electronica, house and techno, all the way up to 170bpm glitched jungle mayhem - I thought, why not have some fun with it!?

So it's certainly not a normal club mix, it's just what I think is the best music out there, without worrying about what genre or box any particular track fits into or how things should be done "properly". I wanted to leave some sections quite ambient as well, to give breathing space between the peaks, so I'm happy to be able to post this new version up, minus the broadcast talking and idents.
