Krakatit is the name for an explosion with an unimaginably destructive effect. Its inventor himself, the engineer Prokop, is frightened by it, but for many others it represents the desired instrument of absolute power. In Karel Čapek's novel of the same name, published in 1924, Prokop's attempts and their consequences were purely the author's vision. On the other hand, the film adaptation, which was created not long after the Second World War and the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, apparently partly reflects real events.
