Literature is a major influence on my music.  As a boy, in the 1960s, I read cowboy novels by Zane Grey (1872 - 1939), e.g. "Riders of the Purple Sage", but no other Westerns until recently.

In April 2023, I'd just finished reading "Butcher's Crossing" by John Williams, which spurred this composition. The novel is set mainly in Colorado and has many highly visual passages. This is one of them. A young man forgets to wear his improvised buffalo-hide eye slits (1870s tech) after a huge blizzard and temporarily loses his sight. His eyes don't recover for many hours, giving rise to much internal anguish as to what his life as a totally blind man might be thereafter.

The piece uses a blues scale to give that North American feel.

Winter Solstice 2023

Here's another improvised, and very calming New Age track. The sound of the EX 7 is really engaging here. It reminds me of some of the sounds that Adrian Belew and Robert Fripp would get out of their Roland GR-300 guitar synthesizers back in the 80's. 🎸 There was still something missing though. How about some bloop, tsss, bop analog drums in the background? These were provided by an old yet still in amazing condition Yamaha PSS-460 Portasound. 🥁

The drifting synth feels like it's floating in the air 🌈, while the steady beat reminds you where the ground is. 🌳 The photo was taken by me above the clouds from the window of an airplane. ☁️

I swear, digging up these oldies from the past, while making the occasional new one ... is now a form of Self Care. 😌
