Prayer | The Hand of God Soundtrack

E151 | Istanbul is full of landmarks and objects dating to the Ottoman period that give us a glimpse of the city's material culture. However, the scents and sounds that made up the urban experience of Ottoman Istanbul often elude us. In our inaugural episode of Season 4, we explore the sounds of Istanbul today and link them to city of the Ottoman past.

Chris Gratien is a doctoral candidate at Georgetown University researching the social and environmental history of the Ottoman Empire and the modern Middle East. 
Emily Neumeier is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Art History at the University of Pennsylvania researching art and architecture in the Ottoman world.

It was during the Gallipoli Campaign of World War One that Mustafa Kemal made his name as a great leader. On August 9th 1915 he withstood a counterattack from New Zealand troops at Chunuk Bair. His staff supported retreating, but Kemal disagreed, telling his men:

“Don’t rush it, my sons. Don’t be in a hurry. We will choose exactly the right minute, then I shall go out in front. When you see me raise my hand, look to it that you have your bayonets sharp and fixed, and come out after me.”

On August 10th, at 4:45am, Kemal raised his hand. The Ottoman attack devastated the British and New Zealand troops, and Chunuk Bair was reclaimed.

Kemal at Gallipoli is the story of that night. The sun sets in the wake of an artillery barrage, echoes of gunfire ringing in the air, the sounds of distant fighting growing weaker. A velvet darkness, the stars singing, insects chirping, a soft wind through the trees and the water lapping against the shore down below. A rumour stirs the Ottoman camp - “We’re attacking now!” It dissipates. What little sleep that can be had is plagued by restless dreams. Finally, it is time to prepare for the counterattack. Bayonets fixed, all eyes are on Kemal, whose hand signals the charge.

Kemal At Gallipoli (chamber orchestra version) (live)

Turkish composer Mesruh Savaş was born in Bulgaria in 1978 and began his music education by playing the piano. After moving to Turkey, he enrolled in Bilkent University in Ankara becoming a student at Theory & Composition Department of Music and Performing Arts Faculty. Here he studied composition and conducting with Işın Metin, Bujor Hoinic, Alfred Michourin and Elena Pushkova. In 2004 his composition Two Movements for Orchestra was awarded with mansion price at “5th Eczacıbaşı National Composition Competition” which helped him made a name among young Turkish composers (he was awarded with second prize for his ballet music The Phoenix at the same competition in 2012).
Later he continued his composition studies with Hasan Uçarsu at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University State Conservatory in İstanbul, gradually evolving his music style emerging from and guided by a strong sense of harmonic movement and textural transformation.
 Currently a full-time member of the İstanbul University State Conservatory, Savaş also works in the fields of electronic and electro acoustic music and is busy promoting the cause of new music.
