PAST FUTURE 

Traditionally rhythm takes shape by repetition of similar sounds which change slightly at uniform time intervals. Since the early ages, people used this repetition to elaborate their emotions and thoughts in some order, to make sense of the passing time in their personal reality. While each moment may be unique and incomparable, the rhythm provides an order that fosters some sense of security. 

So what happens when we alter that rhythms structure? Upon our first encounter with such unfamiliar rhythms, the music typically prods the human psyche and provokes the stability of the ego. This can be very troubling for the human kind, as it is in our nature to identify with familiar patterns, and prediction is at the very roots of perception. Introducing unfamiliarity can leave humans subconsciously disarmed and unguarded. 

However, the mind has a strong sense of plasticity. It is always looking to classify and organize, and when faced with new and erring information, the mind has an amazing capacity to restructure itself to make room for challenging information. 

Over time, unpredictable rhythms in music prompt the reexamination of the ego, and ultimately reveal a new way to appreciate the art form. The very notion of rhythm is as such transformed, which subsequently strengthens the psyche as one learns to confront these new structures. One must restructure their own sense of prediction and pattern recognition to embrace this new reality. In a way, this fosters a new platform of possibility in music and in the mind. It induces a state of readiness for the unknown and entrenchment in the moment, which could potentially play an important role in intellectual development. 

When we pay attention to the sound of Minuteless Recordings, we see that the artists work on this structure at the most fundamental levels. In an attempt to surprise themselves in music, they expand their repertoire of familiar patterns for themselves and their listeners. PAST FUTURE is Metacortex Records’ second collaborative release and released as a compilation album in partnership with Minuteless Recordings. PAST FUTURE, with its 13 experimental tracks, designs the moment peculiarly by presenting rhythm and time on a timeless platform at an unpredictable reality. Time is no longer on a straight line where the past is behind you and the future forward, yet the moment is unquestionably at the center of time. So, without further ado, we present to you this moment.

Sticking a dirty thumb in the eye of fate, our third collaboration sees our marrow deep family malarky turn official as Pace Yourself teams up with YS’s own imprint Erf Records for a split release.

Burn is the second YS album and written as a direct follow-up album to Brutal Flowers. If their first album was an exercise in the incremental, a construction of poise and patience, Burn, should be taken way the fuck at it’s word: it quite literally finds catharsis in twisted reverse. Birthed out the malignant kick found in deconstruction and chaos. The hit is radical and instant: a new way for the world to go up in smoke. Cauterising infected suburban minds world over.

Dunno quite what YS have been ingesting of late but this massively twisted LP touches on a host of gloriously fucked totemic underground sources while not sounding much like any of them. Struggling to conceal their tongues in their cheeks there’s an air of paranoia and proto-conspiracy theory. Leaving you feeling like you’ve stepped into a New World Order.

Burn like other works by YS, is its own ritual beast. ‘Moth’, a track which has been knocking about the underground deejai circuit for many moons, is a real raw slice of stoner erotica that reeks of obsession and unrequited desire. Elsewhere, on tracks like ‘Switch’, ‘Trying’ and ‘Drift’ the throughline from Brutal Flowers can be heard. Underneath the driving heavy gravity the trademark emotional intimacies of YS linger: eternal recurrence, ghosts of static and shortwave, worn memories of the playful and painful sort. The brief moments where flashes of orchestral ambience get out from underneath the swagger are so pure, personal and unguarded that for a moment they leave you completely lonesome.

A dubbed to death classic straight out of the annals of nowhere. A perfect postcard from oblivion. A bleak, bold and personally ferocious vision of tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow -
