In winter 2022 my wife and I took a trip to Zermatt, Switzerland.  Life has been crazy but wonderful since we became new parents.  This was the first trip in a long time that we took with just ourselves.  It was such a special experience to spend this quality time in such an unbelievably magical spot.  We took a train up the Swiss Alps.  As we ascended, we went from seeing some of the greenest grass we've seen to snow and ice capped mountains.  As we went, there were the cutest little Swiss towns.  

Zermatt might now be one of my favorite towns in Europe.  There are no automobiles allowed - only small vehicles that are like golf carts.  So it's almost like a time machine - where people are walking around, going skiing, going hiking, enjoying the incredible restaurants.  We decided to take the Gornergrat Bahn, which is another train that brings you to the summit of a small peak overlooking Zermatt and the Swiss Alps.  I would love to do the train ride again - the sights were absolutely unreal.  When on the top of the peak it was like being in another little world - a snowy tundra with just mountains as far as the eye can see.  I hope I was able to capture some of the magic of this trip in the song I wrote about it and the video I captured!

Well now really when we go back into falling in love. And say, it's crazy. Falling. You see? We don't say "rising into love." There is in it the idea of the fall. And it goes back, as a matter of fact, to extremely fundamental things. That there is always a curious tie at some point between the fall and the creation. Taking this ghastly risk is the condition of there being life. You see, for all life is an act of faith an act of gamble. The moment you take a step, you do so on an act of faith because you don't really know that the floor's not going to give under your feet. The moment you take a journey, what an act of faith. The moment that you enter into any kind of human undertaking in relationship, what an act of faith. See, you've given yourself up. But this is the most powerfull thing that can be done. Surrender. See. And love is an act of surrender to another person. Total abandonment. I give myself to you. Take me. Do anything you like with me. See. So, that's quite mad because you see, it's letting things get out of control. All sensible people keep things in control. Watch it, watch it, watch it. Security? Vigilance? Watch it. Police? Watch it. Guards/Gods? Watch it. Who's going to watch the guards? So, actually, therefore, the course of wisdom, what is really sensible, is to let go, is to commit oneself, to give oneself up and that's quite mad. So we come to the strange conclusion that in madness lies sanity.

ZéM - Tears [A Tribute To Manu Shrine]

Metaform is a hip-hop/electronica music producer/musician who splits his time between Tokyo, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. His instrumental opus, Standing on the Shoulders of Giants (JUST Records) was written, produced and engineered by Metaform at his various home studios over a five year period in which he kept in deep isolation. Since its release, the album has received press in several major publications including URB, REMIX, CMJ, XLR8R, and Alternative Press. Reviews have also been posted on blogs (Blogarhythms, Reminisce & Popmatters), iTunes and Amazon.com.

Early life

Metaform grew up in Los Angeles in a musical household. His Dad played Leonard Cohen, Simon and Garfunkel, and Ravi Shankar records, while Mom listened to Whitney Houston and Curtis Mayfield. His parents divorced in 1988 and soon after he moved to San Francisco with his mother and three sisters. He spent the year of 1998 as an intern at Spark Studios in Oakland, California, in which time he had experience working with E-40, Tone Capone, and Scarface. He spent the year of 1999 shipping records for TRC distribution at which time he delved deeper into the already buzzing Bay-Area Hip-Hop scene. From 2000-2005, he worked as a free-lance sound engineer and worked with many high-profile acts including:
DJ Jazzy Jeff, Afrika Bambaataa, Pharcyde, Hieroglyphics, Living Legends, Goapele, Zion-I, and many others. He graduated from San Francisco State University in 2005 before moving back to Los Angeles and then to Tokyo.


Music career

Metaform began playing piano at age 7, guitar at age 13 and at age 16 he started a heavy metal band with two classmates; they mostly played Metallica and Slayer covers. At age 18 Metaform joined the now defunct San Francisco punk rock band, The Breakouts, as rhythm guitar and they played several club shows in San Francisco. After the The Breakouts, Metaform met 4X-ampL (who now resides in Montreal) in an audio engineering class. The two quickly became friends and formed the rock group Team USA (along with Casten on drums) and Metaform played guitar and contributed vocals. Later, Metaform and 4X-ampL formed the electronica duo Razed High. During this time Metaform was known as Hai-Ding, a play on words in that he was "in hiding" and working on what would later become Standing on the Shoulders of Giants.
