There’s something about surf music. It could be the reverb-soaked guitar pumped out of a Fender amp at break-up volume that makes it so special. It could be the driving ‘boom ka-ka, boom-boom ka’ of the drums that backs so many of the classics. It could be the image of an old lady thrashing all the kids at the lights in her super stock Dodge Dart. But, to me, it’s the innocence of the genre that makes it so appealing. 


There’s little posturing or anger in either the music or the performers, and while it might be weird, humourous, or plain demented - see Takeshi Terauchi’s ‘Csardas No.1’ for an exercise in sending your listener mad - there’s no malice or ‘badness’. Dick Dale has never taken drugs or drunk to excess, and still tours - both because he loves the music and needs to pay for his ongoing medical bills. Brian Wilson may have struggled with his mental health after being forced to churn out pop hit after pop hit, but can you name an angry Beach Boys song? There’s plenty of sorrow, loneliness and heartbreak to go round, but you can always surf the pain away.


In this mix - possibly the first of several - I’ve tried to give a wide representation of surf music, with a few wild cards thrown in for good measure. I’m sure you know, or at least would recognise Dick Dale’s ‘Miserlou’ - popularised by Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Pulp Fiction’ and the Black Eyed Peas’ ‘Pump It’ - so I’ve played one of the first ever recordings of the song. The Cramps’ rendition of ‘Surfin’ Bird’ is wild and probably more scary than funny, but it works, and shows how the form can transcend traditional genres. The two Takeshi Terauchi records I’ve included are both pure surf, yet noticeably Japanese - especially ‘Dark Eyes’, with its prominent use of the shamisen. The Mermen take surf to another level, and their ‘ocean rock’ odysseys develop the sound and capture the essence of the sea better than any other artist or group in this mix. One of my own compositions is nestled away in there as well.


This quintessentially American music that found fame and popularity in the States before the British Invasion - and was all but forgotten about for decades afterwards - is very special to me. Spend 45 minutes of your day dipping your toes, and remember, surf’s up!
