Best known for albums like Radio Amor, Ravedeath 1972, Harmony in Ultraviolet, and his most recent project, No Highs, @TimHecker has always been interested in going beyond the superficialities of ambient — preferring to craft music that challenges, confuses, enthralls, and excites. 

His creative process reflects this, often including bleeding channels, feedbacking pieces, pitch shifting, noise, and distortion. His live shows, meanwhile, can be flooded with darkness or cloaked in fog. 

In this conversation, Tim and I discuss his musical philosophy and love of creative and artistic dissonance, and the inherent challenges in making music that isn’t always easy.

The Mentrek Project has been brewing since 2022. What started as a series of modular jam sessions and late night hangouts began to take shape over 2023 and 2024, as we invited more of our friends to spend an evening banging out dance tunes. Over the years it's grown to involve 10 artists, unified under the vision of club-ready, bass-heavy tracks molded by Nuan Sonar and Thysbe. 

As we progressed and grew through these collaborations, a system emerged. Hours of recordings of eurorack synthesizers, analog drum machines, and vintage records would then be cut up and arranged. Each track aims to have a solid progression, morphing between techno, dubstep, breaks, and footwork. We refuse to be put in a box, and are constantly experimenting and stealing ideas to refit to our own ideals.

'The Visible and The Invisible' is a two part hybrid live performance EP consisting of various reworked ideas and recordings that took place at Scaline Audio this year. 

This EP is a meditation on curation and methodic decay, with hours of recordings being condensed down into concise motifs that then faced performed manipulation via tape loops and distortion units. The resulting composition was then sectioned into eight movements within a two part structure meant to guide the listeners through an emotive and cathartic narrative told using shortwave recordings, forgotten lectures and resonating decays, all awash in a living fog of noise.
