After laying out this feel-good progression on the acoustic, a little bird pointed to Rapper's Delight to bring it to life, just like it did for Hip Hop back in 1979. It's amusing to be reminded of Hip Hop's innocuous, if not innocent roots, which makes this a nice little mesh. Also pairs great with a breeze and a smile :)

Having spent the longest time trying to make it as epic as possible, I eventually sat this one out on that front, picked up the guitar and noodled up this waltzy and shuffly take on Drive it Like You Stole it. // Just Guitar pt9 - Stan // When I first listened to the Marshall Mathers LP, I knew I loved the sound but never truly appreciated the quality of its production until many years after. It not only “holds up”, but still imo remains a gold standard today. I like to use “Stan” as an example.

The bassline in Stan doesn’t stray far from Dido’s Thank You, but the deviations make a world of difference to build a much darker backdrop for the storyline of Stan. In particular, I really enjoy the creative deviations in the bassline when Dido sings “it’s not so bad, it’s not so bad” in Stan. Its bassline goes from the root => 6th => b7th => 6th, and despite all the similarities to the original, Thank You never had the 6th and flat 7th in the relevant part. That combo leaves our ears in a limbo, before resolving back to the root at the end of the loop. The decision to pick out Dido’s sample, and the ear to deviate from it really highlighted the hallmark qualities of a dope producer.

Anyway, I had a lotta fun making this guitar arrangement of the hook in Stan on the rooftop of my building. It started out as a Just Guitar instalment, but I couldn’t help but play out the drums for that extra lofi kick. Hope yall enjoy this and don’t forget to go back and listen to Stan and the rest of the LP once in a while.

// JustGuitar pt21 - Stay Together for the Kids \\ Back when you could program custom 8-bit ringtones on old Nokia phones, I recall spending hours by the piano piecing together the guitar intro for this @blink182 song, labouring through the keypad (no touchscreen on this badboy) and proudly making this my ringtone. For better or worse, I also remember the chuckle I had when I realised the pun behind Take off your Pants and Jacket 😂

These days songs from that era kind of fade to a dusted corner of my mind, but during my workout yesterday I’d come across a story from @svintmvrcus recommending First Date from that album as a workout track. Who would’ve thought? Ended up giving that album a spin for the rest of my workout and this song brought me back to hours spent hunched over that piano, the pun chuckle, and thinking how this song made me like Blink even more cuz they’d grown up from Enema of the State, but what did I know about growing up back then 👾

My Nokia 8210 has long disappeared so I ended up spending the rest of the evening piecing together the song on the acoustic this time around. Started off playing the melody on the electric, but there was such a rush of memories and thoughts from yesteryears I couldn’t help but deviate from the original to just noodle and see what came out. So here it is - my second stab at this not-so cover of my favourite Blink song, decades later, graduating from an 8-bit phone to my favourite guitars 🎸

Blink 182 - Stay Together for the Kids (Metic Guitar Cover)

As Masego puts it, Tadow refers to expressing inexplicable synchronicity of human life and the sublime experiences of subjectivity and wonder. Finding my expression of this turned out to come in the form of a waltz that hopes to add a subtle, subdued lofi application to this groovy concept. Hope yall like this flip.

Hong Kong will always be my Home, but I’ve yet to release anything that is representative of my time there. My journey into recording and production took root in Hong Kong around 2010 and Neon City Memoirs is largely a collection of my work done there from then onwards.

The nature of putting out really old material meant I’ve long battled self-doubt in releasing NCM for fear of the notion that it no longer represents the best of my capabilities, and that it would define my work from here on out. I’ve since made peace with this decision, for having them be available to you all is more meaningful to me than the paralysis of having nothing to share.

As much as I hate to admit it, music has always been a selfish pursuit for me, as only until very recently, I’ve never had to make music for anyone else. What this means is I’ve always made music in accordance with my moods and emotions at a given time. This has led me down a variety of genres ranging from ambient, trip-hop and hip hop instrumentals. What remains constant is the guitar which has always been the de-facto device through which I can fully express my thoughts.

NCM encapsulates a time in my life when I was much more reckless with my emotions, when I allowed my mind to zip to deep corners of happiness, sadness, giddiness, cheesiness and yearning etc. Part of getting older - i mean - maturing meant I can better manage the speed of these transits, but it’d also contributed to the decision paralysis as I mentioned above. For better or worse, Part One mainly consists of my darker and moodier instrumentals from back then. I wish I could’ve brought you all more uplifting ones during these trying times, but I promise they will come in Parts Two and Three.

Six years ago, i released this bootleg right before i embarked on the Mongol Rally, a 37-day long journey from London to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The fact that this song is still relevant in 2019 is more than I ever could've hoped for, and for those still listening to this today I'd like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart, and that your support means the world to me. 

As for me, 2018 was a momentous year for me for I have come out of a long hiatus from releasing music. I released an EP under @horizonterminal with a buddy @lam_chop and also have been doing steady releases on my Spotify and Instagram channels.

Metic fuses soulful guitar grooves with laid-back hip-hop beats. While his playing is rooted in blues and fingerstyle guitar, his productions are informed by 90s boombap, G-funk and trip-hop. A nomadic soul and frequent collaborator, the Brooklyn-based Hong Kong native continues to draw inspiration from both cities. This is showcased in his album releases: Soul Feather (@wearestereofox) which documents the journey of moving to New York, and A Fleeting Dream in Waking Life (@inneroceanrecords) which is a nostalgic experimental undertaking with Hong Kong ambient producer @norvik-music.

His latest album Pastel Lovers is a full-length LP under @horizonterminal, a duo project with longtime friend @lam_chop, and it a take on an idealized vision of young love with a soothing blend of beatmaking, guitar and piano reflecting the pastel skies of British Columbia.
