Few reggae artists stand as tall as Eek-a-Mouse, quite literally. Well past six feet tall, he towers over the reggae scene with his vocal prowess. As an international phenomenon, The Mouse, can be referred to as the originator of sing-jaying. Cementing syllables like “biddy biddy beng” as the catchphrase of the 80’s, he combines singing, deejaying and a oriental sounding weirdness by blending and transforming his voice into its own unique instrument. Although he thematically highlights depressing and violent affairs in some of his lyrics he never fails to deliver a sense of comical irony through his oddball performances.

The “lovers rock” vocalist, Beres Hammond, maintains a cool profile. From afar it might be hard to tell just how extensive his musical career stretches considering his modest appearance and unassuming demeanor. Not only has his humble approach to life earned him a powerful legacy of soulful reggae music but it has also given him the joy of hearing the whole world sing along. In 2013, he was awarded the “Order of Jamaica” by Jamaican government recognizing his exceptional and dedicated contributions to the Jamaican music Industry.

Name an accomplished R&B star of the past decade and it’s likely there is a touch of Badu in their work. Named the “godmother of soul” her eccentric style reflects that of R&B, 70’s soul, and 80’s hip-hop. Emerging in 1997 with her debut album “Baduizm”, her music became associated with neo-soul and has been met with critical and commercial success. Collaborating with influential figures like Amy Winehouse, Beyoncé, Janelle Monáe, Rihanna, and Grimes, the queen of neo-soul has transformed into an R&B deity. With her life’s work split between singing, song-writing, record producing, and acting it’s astounding to learn she’s a full time mother who homeschools all of her children. In the past she has faced heavy criticism for some of her thought processes but if anyone takes the time to study her intentions they will see why she is often misunderstood. As an African-American woman who grew up in a time where people of color are taught that they are second-class citizens she has powered through all adversity stating, “I’m for anything that feels right and is in harmony with the universe” and “I will not take back any messages that come from love.”
