During my two months trip in Brazil I collected some new Brazilian gems. After coming back to Holland I got invited by my dear friend Maron Dekkers founder of Baobab Musica, to play a two hour set   and a tiny interview during the show.
I did all my best to make a selection of the tons of records I found in Brazil.

As a proud Cabo Verdean, born and raised in the harbor city of Rotterdam, I offer this as a gift to all my Cabo Verdean people around the world.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the independence of our beautiful archipelago, Cabo Verde. After so many years of struggle, suffering, and being undermined, not just as Cabo Verdeans, but as human beings. We stayed strong. We continued to do whatever it took to keep our culture alive, to make sure it would stand the test of time.

Rotterdam played a vital role in preserving Cabo Verdean culture. Music became a lifeline—a way to keep our identity alive. At a time when we weren’t even allowed to enjoy life freely, Cabo Verdeans came to Rotterdam to record under the Morabeza Records label. It was a form of resistance. They sent hidden messages through their music and album covers. Messages of hope, resilience, and strength to those back home, urging them to hold on and believe in a better future.

This is my way of honoring our culture, all the Cabo Verdean warriors, my family—and especially my grandfather, who made the journey from Cabo Verde in search of a better life for his loved ones. To my grandmother, who had the courage and faith to come to Rotterdam with her children!

Today, I’m proud to see our culture still standing strong around the world. As part of the 3rd/4th generation of Cabo Verdean immigrants, we are doing our best to keep growing and evolving. And I’m proud of every single one of you. Stay close to your family, stay close to your culture, and never forget your roots.

We are a beautiful people. And I love you all. ❤️🇨🇻✊🏾🏝️🌍🇬🇼

This is a home recorded set of one of the best Cape Verdian songs.

Cape Verde is an island archipelago that was uninhabited until the Portuguese arrived in 1462. The sailors brought with them African slaves, and the islands' population became mixed with elements of both races. Climate conditions made the islands inhospitable, and the Portuguese governments mostly ignored the inhabitants and the frequent droughts and famines that wracked the islands periodically. As a result, there are now more Cape Verdeans abroad than at home, and sizable communities exist in New England, Portugal, Wales, Senegal, Italy, France and the Netherlands.
