I first met Diego in January 2005 when I was fortunate enough to visit Argentina on a DJ tour, we hit it off and have stayed connected ever since. Fast forward to now and the upcoming release of his superb Deal With It EP, written and produced by him and Diego Cid, under their D&D moniker.

Diego Ro-K and Diego CD are undoubtedly the main pioneers of the Argentinian underground electronic scene, with both starting their music careers in the 80s and building the scene through parties, club nights, compilations and radio shows. During the ’90s, outside of D&D, they also created the DJ crews, Urban Groove (Diego Cid) and DJ Union (Diego Ro-K) via which they flooded the country with the best house and techno music. They are responsible for bringing the likes of Juan Atkins, Ricardo Villalobos, Justin Harris, Murk, Woody McBride, DJ Hell, Michael Mayer, DJ Pierre, Vitalic and many more to play in the country. In 1999, they signed their 1st recording contract with EMI/Virgin, becoming the 1st techno duo to sign with an international company.

It’s an awesome journey through the underground which absolutely stinks of class.

The 2 main tracks on the EP sit firmly in the dark corners of any nightclub, both completely original whilst retaining that MFF swing required from all of our releases… And with a belting remix from fellow Argentinian Nacho Bolognani (@nachobolognani), to bring a slightly more housier feel to the track, you can’t go wrong.

Parallel to the development of Modern Explorer, Alex has founded a side project and created the deep house band, Black Logic. Comprising Alex at its nucleus, the new project incorporates a bass player, guitarist, saxophonist and a revolving roster of vocalists, with the intention being to channel the deep house and jazzanova era that was present in London in 1998, when Alex first moved to the capital.   
After immersing himself in the world of modular machines for the last few years, the collective has given Alex the opportunity to express his love for jazz and deeper shades of house music through live instrumentation. Rekindling his connection with organic instruments and allowing him to implement his skills as a composer and musical director, the band have been prolific with 50 tracks already recorded. Exploring the breadth of styles within jazz and deep house, they have delved into broken beats, and more traditional four-to-the-floor, always with a firm focus on depth and feeling. 
A staple of the UK’s underground electronic scene, Alex Arnout has been DJing and producing for over two decades, playing everywhere from DC10 to Fabric. Beyond his DJ career, he's been a force in the studio, collaborating with major names like Daz I Kue (Bugs In The Attic), Leiam Sullivan (as Ceramix), and Jamie Jones and producing tracks that have earned global recognition. As the head of his own label, Dogmatik, Alex also played a crucial role in launching the career of Maya Jane Coles and supporting a roster of talent such as Glimpse, Peace Division, Afrilounge, Tom Demac, Mark E, Ed Davenport, Stojche and Claire Ripley.
His productions are known for their depth and groove, and with Black Logic, he’s bringing that same energy to a live setting. Music For Freaks is chuffed to be releasing this debut EP and it marks the first of our 2025 releases, which will focus on live electronic projects from artists with deep roots in electronic music.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve had an amazing number of requests from both established and new up-and-coming producers to remix, redo and re-interpret original Freaks tracks. 

In these moments, I’m always humbled to think that the music we made over the years still inspires the house music scene of today. 

Of course, we also absolutely love people playing around with our music; it consistently produces inspirational and surprising results every time…. 

So, I’m very proud to kick off the 1st in our “Re-Freaked” series, which will see Freaks tracks transformed through various mutations, emotions, circumstances, and situations, then re-visited, re-freaked, and born again by producers we admire today. 

This first release features 2 of my personal favorite Freaks tracks and both include the ever-stunning vocal skills of our beloved fellow Freak, Diz Washington. 

First up is ‘Situations’ taken from the Freaks album, Psych and which features a genius flute performance from the wonderful Antipodean jazz multi-instrumentalist, Nathan Haines. It has also had a brilliant reworking from Dave Aju too. 

Going back further into the vaults, You Ain’t House’ just had to be re-done! Originally released on Wash House, with a Swag (aka Chris Duckenfield & Richard Brown) “We Is House” remix, this still stands the test of time for me.

pioneering architects of the scene but what is also great in equal measures is the constant
recognition of a stream of new talent, both DJs and producers, keeping underground House Music
fresh and solid as a genre. Fletch is undoubtedly one of these new breeds of house producers / DJs
garnering support from the likes of The Martinez Brothers, Loco Dice, Jaden, Luciano and Ricardo

What happens when you bring together a gifted multi-instrumentalist/producer, a cultural activist/DJ (both from Brazil) and a Chicago House legend? They create a stunning EP that remains true to MFF’s guiding principles and further solidifies the label’s commitment to celebrating the brilliance of true musical misfits in house music.

Robert Owens is an artist who needs no introduction. Arguably house music’s most recognizable voice, he was one-third of the legendary ‘Fingers Inc’ alongside fellow Chicago icons, Larry Heard and Ron Wilson. Now based in Berlin, Robert has also performed on many major club anthems including I’ll Be You Friend (David Morales), Mine To Give (Photek) and Lowlife (Layo and Bushwacker). A quote from i-D Magazine says it all, “If God could sing, he would sound like Robert Owens”.

L_cio (aka Laercio Schwantes) is a virtuoso flute player, studio maestro and live-electronic-musician with residencies in his native Sao Paulo and a string of prestigious festival appearances to his name including Dekmantel, DGTL, Mysteryland, and Rock in Ri. Navigating seamlessly between acoustic and digital production, L_cio's output transcends musical boundaries, as demonstrated by his instrumental contribution to Portable's 2014 crossover hit Surrender (‘Best New Track’ - Pitchfork).

Tessuto, is a former member of the diverse VoodooHop art collective, formed in Sao Paulo in 2009 with the aim of transforming the city’s abandoned buildings into creative spaces for music and art projects. In a city where 15,000 people live on the streets, Tessuto argues that reclaiming these areas is an important step in improving how people interact with their urban environment. Tessuto would subsequently create Carlos Capslock, the innovative squat parties dedicated to electronic music where L_cio, a fellow committed supporter of street-culture in Sao Paulo, is also a resident.

The coming together of these three artists began during the Pandemic lockdowns of 2020, when the world most needed a dose of unity and creativity. It started as a virtual jam session and led to two new productions being fully written, firstly Rising - a track featuring a sublime blend of strings and synths from the multi-instrumentalist L_cio, and the ever-timeless vocals from Robert. Followed by Get Back Up Again, a collaboration which brought in Paolo Tessuto to create an epic house/gospel fusion and a true testament to the power of electronic music to uplift and inspire.

On hearing the EP, we just had to send it to our friend of the label and the all-around-incredible-talent that is Luciano, who fell in love with Rising and gave us a 9-minute remix that blends all the musical elements into an epic minimal track.

Kicking off with ‘Vaporized’, a catchy little groover with dried out percussion which slaps down over a sultry bassline. Wibbly-wobbly FX combine with mysterious chimes and sketchy radio interference to create an odd atmosphere.
Then we have ‘The Green Bell’, a squelchy heads-down vibe provider. ‘Wind And Fire’ brings the EP to a close and continues the production duo’s use of strange sounds to great effect. This is no run-of-the-mill 4x4 production, there’s depth, subtle progression and hypnotic rhythms as only two fellow freaksters like Dan and Chris can muster.

At the end of last summer, an old friend and once label manager of MFF sent us a link. This friend knows his musical onions (thanks Leon) and said that he really thought we should take a listen... The link was for a re-edit of DoobieDooWohoo by Freaks from up-and-coming house classicist, AJ Christou and yes, it was pure fire...

The re-edit (name-checking Ibiza’s fabulous Ushuaia Club) was inspired by AJ’s appearances for Ants, the legendary club night, and had multiple plays by Jamie Jones and Martinez Brothers to name but a few, at the end of the last non-Covid Summer season, when we could all dance!

Having already made some solid indents into the house music scene worldwide, including releases on Cuttin Headz, Leftroom, and his own awesome Celesta Recordings to say nothing of some enviable DJ sets flourishing from a residency at Sankeys Manchester, we are extremely proud to present this redo (doobiedoowoohoo).

Backing up the B-side in a rather spectacular fashion, the incognito Maintenance took time out to re-edit an old Freaks classic The Rain too, (Woohoo) which rounds off our MFF 20th-anniversary celebrations very nicely indeed.

A long time ago them Freaks (Luke Solomon & Justin Harris) built a bridge with Chicago. It was a long Freaky bridge that absorbed a whole community of misfits. They joined forces and built a fort under the banner of Music for Freaks.
The fort was built to protect them from the normals - but also a place to build an army of associated miscreants that would slowly begin their attack on the offending world of bland dance music. The army grew and Freaks took to the road ....
