i spent the summer of 2021 recovering from and processing a very intense season of my life during which i formed incredible friendships and grieved lifelong ones.  it was during that summer that i really began to realize the direction that my life was headed in.  before putting words to it, i felt god leading me towards music and preparing my heart for it, but in those early stages, i couldn't tell the difference between preparation and pursuit.  it led me to wonder how i could feel so sure about my purpose, and still see no fruit.  

the timing has been so apt to continue taking steps towards that goal, and throughout the entire process, the lyric "there's a palace you've made for me" has really stuck.  i had this mental picture of a palace that i was walking towards with god, hand in hand, on a long, winding path.  i felt like i was pulling his arm to move forward, and at the time he was asking me to wait.  

i've been thinking about the promise of that palace that he's made for me because i'll be recording my first ep in a week, and have needed a lot of reassurance that it's going to go well.  it's encouraging that we've actually gotten to move a little closer to that palace, but what's most encouraging is that i know that it exists at all.  he's pulled so many strings to reassure me that he refuses to break his promise, and i love where he's leading.

anyway, there's the fun little announcement that we're making strides towards the ep!  i definitely would appreciate all of your prayers and crossed fingers because my perfectionist tendencies are giving me a lot of anxiety.  but i cannot wait to create it and share it with you :)

this has been one of my favorite songs for the last 2 years. the combo of mature songwriting, religious and emotive motifs, & violin & french components create an engaging listening experience.

recording this cover, the lyrics, "so self-indulgent & self-referential / no audience could ever want you / you crave the applause yet hate the attention" stuck out to me. i hadn't noticed how often those lyrics apply to me. the guilt linked to putting yourself out there. confidence is required to share music with the world, & a persistent voice in my head (& i don't doubt in yours too) tells me that if i'm confident enough to ask for what i deserve i'm greedy, & if I'm not then i lack courage.

"where you go, i'm going, so jump and i'm jumping / since there is no me without you." if you agree to keep standing on whatever soapbox your soul longs to stand on, i will too. we'll always have that voice in our heads telling us that it's gluttonous to ask for significance. but maybe that significance is exactly what god made us for.

i recorded a minute-long cover of "spies" for my socials a month or two back, and sometimes the algorithm is wonky and people find it later. that happened with this cover, so here's the whole thing! it's a pretty lax video this week but that kind of reflects the way i feel about this song- it's comfy because it reminds me of my childhood. i was raised on coldplay, so the parachutes album was always on heavy rotation. songs like this one- mysterious, brooding, ominous- felt like adult songs to me as a kid, so i'd listen as a guilty pleasure. this is one of the songs that reminds me of starting to get a glimpse of who i'd be as an adult back when i was young. not mysterious or brooding, just mature haha.

guess what! i'm back to the mindset where i think i'm having writers block when i'm actually writing a song a week and just have no creative self awareness! it's a wonder what open tuning will do.

i have been an absolute songwriting monster. like two to three songs a week just naturally flowing. so, this is another new one.

i've said this before, but in this songwriting era, i'm really enjoying not explaining what these songs are about. letting you do with them what you will. so i want you to have this, but what i will say is that the line in my song "child's play," "there's a palace you've made for me," has developed a lot of significance in my life. and there's a palace, but there's also a cabin in the valley. that's all :) :)

man, COMPLETE tone shift from last week lol. so a little peek into my process: i choose which songs i record week by week based off of four options. i either record a song that someone has requested on social media from one of my reels/tiktoks, a cover of a song i can't get out of my head, a really recent write, or a song i need to record for... bigger purposes. this may or may not be one of the latter. so i hope you're a fan :)

believe it or not, i have actually never posted "doll" anywhere. the word "doll" wasn't even in the song until like two weeks ago. it was never something i was super proud of, but hearing your music professionally produced changes the way you hear the raw thing sometimes. and upon returning to this song while i was listing out my songs to play at gigs, i realized that this one had huge potential to be a silly, straight up bop. i had a lot of fun coming up with fun little things to add to this one, and i didn't take myself very seriously in the process. but it's a fun, youthful, silly song, so that's entirely the point.

tiktok asked for it, so here it is: "another voice." of the full-length songs i've posted, "another voice" falls in with "the lake of painted colors," "2:45," "could i even answer?," "child's play," "joiner," "caffeine comfort," and "girls like me." i've posted more from that project than i thought i did! (wanna know a secret? it's my favorite i've written)

i wrote "another voice" (and the rest of those songs) when i had zero commitments. period. i had gone through a rocky, complicated and chaotic season beforehand and was blessed between two seasons to rest for five months. i wrote SO much music- it was awesome.

but i faced an interesting internal conflict i had never realized existed until i was so isolated. when i fully applied the purpose of that season, there was no reason to improve or make strides in any way. in order to actually fully rest, i had to stop focusing on self-improvement. that was a weird phenomenon both for me personally, and as a young american in the modern day. so i wrote about it, obviously.

i probably will never have that problem again. i hope I do- it's a great problem to have. to force yourself to actually rest in a day and age that demands effort from you. but the point is, i don't know how relatable this song is going to be, so i hope you like the musicality :)

i wrote "autumn falls" pretty recently- i had the idea of this play on words and used it to write about how i've been feeling in this literal season.

this time last year, i had just reached my financial goal to produce, mix and master the ep. i was scheduling the recording process and making content still, but it was kind of a breath of fresh air. i never stopped working because i want to adequately fund the marketing phase of the project, but having hit that milestone gave me more freedom to rest a little. i read a lot in my free time, and watched halloween movies i'd never seen, and baked oatmeal sandwich cookies (the pecan pie line is only there for rhyming's sake- i don't like pecan pie).

i've been longing to use my time this year the same way i did last year. but i'm preparing to release the ep, and then to jet off to amsterdam for a few months. so that kind of rest is out of the question. i set apart one day of the week to chill, and that's when i can still indulge in my favorite fall traditions. but it's just one day out of the week. another way-old video from way back when i played at songbird in october!! this song has been heard by more people than any other of mine; it was my little viral moment on which i'm still riding a high. i wrote it about using food as a control variable when the rest of my life felt out of control. i am proud to say that i did start drinking coffee again. there's a reason that's the one that made it into the chorus- my life was worse without it. let that be a lesson to you, i suppose

i wrote diary in amsterdam about wishing that certain people would share more of their lives with me. i am a very open person by nature (there is a reason that my debut ep is titled open book), so when people withhold themselves i get frustrated. that was a common thread to my time in amsterdam that i had to learn and learn again, and i'm still not sure i've really learned it, because to know and be known is a great joy to me. i had the idea of centering it around a diary, but in reality, if i like a person this much, i'd probably give them access to my diary. but at the same time, i hope the people about whom I write my songs never find out. i guess i'm multi-faceted

also i finally recorded something new for you!! are you proud of me? i really want to find a rhythm of recording more new things for you; there are so many songs i've written that you haven't yet heard. it's on my heart and that means it's on my to do list ;)

something i've learned in the last few months is that when you bite the sides of your tongue, ever so gently, subconsciously, and frequently, you can develop what's called a scalloped tongue, which is basically when those bite marks show for the long haul. i learned this from experience, and it made me think about all of the little ways my day-to-day anxiety presents itself: biting the inside of my cheeks; grinding my teeth; tensing my jaw. i found it a fitting metaphor for the way that the freedom to express yourself freely in a relationship, romantic or platonic, comes from very carefully curated expression. kind of feels like lockjaw.

my jaw doesn't feel tense anymore but the scalloped tongue has low key become a staple. makes me feel a little like a lizard. thought you should know that to lighten the mood

it's been a while since i posted a full-length cover, and on the day i decided to record one, i felt drawn to one of my favorite songs of all time. i have this playlist with maybe twenty songs on it of the most meaningful and beautiful songs to me, and this one is on it. 

i started listening to phoebe bridgers in 2021 in honor of my sister, who was dealing with a lot of depression and anxiety and had to take a step back from technology. it made me appreciate having free access to music, so i listened to some of her favorite artists, and phoebe stuck because, surprise surprise, i was also depressed at the time. savior complex didn't make a lot of sense to me lyrically at first, but as i've sat with it for four years, it's made more and more sense. it is also just heartbreakingly beautiful, which is my favorite genre of music :)

a lot of times i write songs to try to create a physical manifestation of my emotions, and i see a long life ahead for that immortalized feeling. when i wrote fancy shmancy free, it was not that; it was simply to write a song just to talk about some random stuff that'd happened that night. i didn't put too much effort into trying to make it eloquent or even good, but people have seemed to like it, and i've come to really like it too. here's my song about wishing i could be fancy shmancy free :)

fancy shmancy free (acoustic, original)

i did a short cover of this song and it did pretty well on my socials, so i thought i'd record you a full length version :) i discovered the wrecks during the open book tour, but never really became obsessed with them until they released their ep, inside:. i listened to that ep on repeat at the beginning of the summer, and this is one of my favs (along with speed!!)

i was introduced to manchester orchestra in amsterdam (seriously- of course i knew phoebe bridgers' rendition of their song "the gold" before that). skip forward to the fall of 2024, when i was working night shifts at trader joe's. while we restocked shelves after we closed we could listen to music, which is when i stumbled upon bad books, a collaboration between members of manchester orchestra and kevin devine. i listened to II: revisited first, and i love this version of "it never stops" so much, i cannot listen to the original version of this song. my best friend disagrees though, so we are a house divided. whichever version you prefer, you seemed to like my short cover of this one a little while ago, so here's my full rendition :)
