Parler de paysage sonore, de soundscape, ce n’est pas seulement appliquer à l’auditif les caractéristique du paysage visuel, c’est viser le paysage sonore dans sa spécificité perceptive. Une différence fondamentale : l’oreille n’a pas de paupière. Nous vivons de manière permanente dans un environnement sonore partiellement qualifié. Dès lors, la seule protection contre cette intrusion permanente d’informations est un mécanisme psychologique de sélection. Le paysage sonore est visé à l’intérieur, il s’impose comme une constitution perceptive, là où le paysage visuel semble toujours visé au dehors.

La notion de paysage sonore, en anglais soundscape, est introduite en théorie musicale par le canadien Raymond Murray Schafer, dans les années 70 et se trouve pleinement exposée dans l’ouvrage de référence, The Soundscape, our sonic environment and the tuning of the world, publié en 1977. « Quelle est la relation entre l’homme et les sons de l’environnement qui est le sien, et que se produit-il lorsque ces sons viennent à changer ? » demande Schafer au seuil de son ouvrage. On pressent que la visée est double : il s’agit à la fois, dans une visée descriptive, d’étudier une relation changeante de l’homme aux sons, et, dans une visée axiologique et prescriptive, de s’interroger sur la manière de pallier les changements dès lors qu’ils peuvent s’apparenter à une dégradation de l’harmonie (« tuning ») du paysage sonore.

Talking soundscape is not just apply to the auditory characteristic of the visual landscape is the focus in its specific soundscape perception. A fundamental difference: the ear has no lid. We live permanently in a sound environment partially qualified. Therefore, the only protection against the intrusion of information is a permanent psychological mechanism of selection. The soundscape is covered inside, it stands out as a perceptual constitution, where the visual landscape always seems described outside.

The concept of "paysage sonore", french word for soundscape, music theory is introduced by the Canadian Raymond Murray Schafer, in the 70's and is fully described in the reference book, The Soundscape o Sonic Environment and The Tuning of the world , published in 1977. "What is the relationship between man and sounds of the environment that is his, and that happens when these sounds come to change? Schafer asks in the beginning of his work. We feel that the aim is twofold: it is both in a descriptive, to study a changing relationship of man to sounds, and to a prescriptive and axiological referred, to consider how to overcome the changes since they may amount to a deterioration of harmony ("tuning") of soundscape.
