From within the remains of a ruined temple burst a pair of ten gallon hats, which clung to the heads of two travelers who now found themselves far from home.The vast desert that lay before them was the same that they had known, but the inhabitants that strode upon it’s surface were quite different from any that they had seen before. A menagerie of mechanical creatures bearing eerily human form were all that seemed to inhabit this furthest expanse of the world, and as Scruggs and Sonny Jim emerged into the sunlight that scattered off of the creature’s metallic exoskeletons it quickly became clear that beings of organic construction such as themselves were not welcome here. 

Knowing that they had earned the ire of the unspeakable presence that dwelt within the temple behind them, the pair decided to face the mechanical menace before them with a grim certainty of purpose as they spoke

“Scruggs?” 
“Yup Sonny Jim”
“The Death Knell’s gon’ be ringin’ for someone by the end of this here day. What’s saying we try and make sure it ain’t us?”

With Scruggs’ agreement communicated through a tip of his hat, Sonny Jim procured from his pocket a bundle of dynamite and lit its fuse in a single fluid motion, heaving it into the horde before them as Scruggs whipped a pair of revolvers from his holsters and unleashed a cacophonous barrage of bullets from their barrels. As the sounds of his shots hitting their mark began to reach the pair’s ears, the two cowboys charged forth into the fray, kicking their way through the hollow hunks of metal that sat now sat lifeless after Scrugg’s initial salvo. Lacking any sort of plan, the pair relied purely on their own gumption to see them through as they employed every trick the cattle trail had ever taught them even the odds they now faced. Indeed, such was their resolve that Sonny Jim had all but forgotten about the dynamite that he had thrown when it exploded some distance away, knocking them off their feet and engulfing them in a flash of light that seemed far brighter than he had expected. As the sounds of battle began to fade around them, Scruggs and Sonny Jim wondered only one thing. Would they ever wander familiar trails again? Or were they setting off on a new route, one that lead only to that great big cattle drive in the sky?

BURR OAK deliver RING THE DEATH KNELL as the penultimate preview of their forthcoming album, which is set to soon immerse the EATBRAIN horde in the duo’s cinematic Neurofunk stylings and detail the full adventures of their chosen heroes, the cowboys known only as Scruggs & Sonny Jim.

The battlefield lay littered with discarded weapons, blades buried in slain foes that slumped vacantly over brothers in arms and enemies alike, forgotten by those who had survived the engagement and long since moved on. Discarded lances, pikes, and spears jutted from the ground at odd angles, creating a twisted and nightmarish landscape eerily akin to the forests from which their hafts had once been hewn. As the setting sun glittered gently upon the mail and plate that still encased the remains that lay upon the bloodied ground, this grove of gore cast its shadow upon the soil, and within this darkness began to coalesce the shared woes of all who had fallen that day.

As the sun fell from the sky the shadows seemed to draw closer and closer together, merging inexorably upon the corpse of a noble knight who lay impaled at the center of the field, his heraldry marred by the vital fluids that had quickly gushed from the wound in his chest. Into this gaping wound did the shadows creep, infusing the knight’s body with energies of vengeance extracted from the thousand other souls that had died at his side. As this vengeful ichor began to flow within his veins the knight slowly rose, his plate armor clanking softly amidst the dead silence that surrounded him. As he stood before the final rays of daylight, the knight grabbed the hilt of the great sword that had run him through, dislodging it from his chest with somber and dutiful purpose before hefting its mighty length over his left shoulder. In the vacancy left behind by this behemoth blade a heart of pure shadow burst into being, sending forth a shockwave of darkness that drowned out even the light of the newly risen moon. Awakening once more to life, the knight forsook the loyalties that had led him to the field of battle, replacing them with the grievances of the countless mutilated forms beside him. REVENANT was he and all their sorrows suffused him, and thus for each of the slain he would exact eternal revenge.

SLWDWN rises to the fore of the EATBRAIN horde with REVENANT, his debut EP on the label following an initial appearance on 2022’s “Divergence IV” compilation. On REVENANT, SLWDWN showcases a set of shadowy sonics dripping with sinister style, marking himself as a champion of such umbral sounds amidst the label’s ever growing roster.

Making only a minute splash, a pair of sandaled feet landed in the murky waters of the city’s sewer system. Their owner winced slightly as his first step squelched upon the sodden and soggy soil that coated the ground within these grand pipes, but redoubled his focus with the knowledge that their labyrinthine network would provide him with a means to sneak into the castle unseen, undetected, and with minimal resistance. Assured in this knowledge, he strode forwards with confidence, undeterred by the murky and fetid environment in which he now traveled.

After some time in the sewers, the ronin became aware that he was being watched. From the most shadowed corners of the system's most cavernous corridors, he began to catch glimpses of sickly yellow eyes that followed him not with the vigilance of man but with the ravenous hunger of a beast. As he quickened his pace, he felt only more and more of these eyes upon him and began to rush through the passages in search of a glimmer of light. Finding it deep beneath the grated cover of a street-level vent, he turned to face his would-be assailants and found them on all sides; feral rats of a gargantuan size that dripped noxious poisons from the rotted enamel of their exposed teeth. As he assumed a defensive posture, the ronin grinned beneath the wide brim of his armored hat. It had been some time since he had been able to test his skills against an enemy this numerous, and his blade hungered to cleave through the soft hides of these rodents of unusual size. Thus it was that as the horde came upon him, his battle cry echoed upwards to the street above with glee, alongside the frenzied screeching of the swarm that fell like grass before his honed blade. Even within this melee, however, the ronin could not shake the feeling that he was being watched again, now by more human eyes. As the penultimate rat fell before his blade, a thunderous explosion reverberated throughout the tunnel, silencing the chamber he stood within. As his gaze traveled upwards, it followed a thin trail of smoke from the silver barrel of a six-shooter upwards to the brims of two hats, wide like his own but made of leather rather than straw. From beneath one came a single gruff greeting, breaking the silence wrought by the gun that had emerged from the darkness.

Drumsound & Bassline Smith are one of the most significant acts in drum 'n' bass. Their foundations were built in the very earliest days of rave, and their productions have never lost that pioneering spirit. Bridging the gap between the underground and mainstream, able to smash the biggest festival stages while still able to rinse it out for the aficionados, they've proven their status time and time again. And, now, they've got a a brand new album for us, “Wardance”. The first single, “Come With Me”, is already shutting down dances everywhere and stormed to the top of the DnB charts, so the follow-up comes loaded with anticipation.

This time, we're being treated to the LP's title track, and it's clear that Drumsound & Bassline Smith aren't playing. “Wardance” opens in a dark, forbidding landscape of unsettling scythe-swings of synth-brass and dissonant pads. It all blatantly signifies approaching danger. As gritty, grimed-up orchestral stabs fill the atmosphere, and chest-crushing sledgehammer kick drums build, it's time for ravers to find their space on the floor. We already know this one's going to be weighty.

The drop has Drumsound & Bassline Smith's name written all over it. Whiplash strikes of kick and snare, supported by the rolling breaks that have always featured in their work, keep it moving. Insistently sustained waves of bassline, and those electric-charge modulations to mark out the ends of phrases, drive the energy onwards. This one's going to be a deejay's weapon of choice across the sub-genre divisions. Tech, rollers, jump-up, however a selector classifies themselves, they're going to want this on their USB for when it's rave-destruction time.

It might only be the second taste we've had of the “Wardance” album, but this release, combined with “Come With Me”, demonstrates that Drumsound & Bassline Smith are at the top of their game. Of course, there's the scientific production technicality born of long years of experience, but that's not all that's on offer. These producers add an intimate understanding of how to bring vibes to a dancefloor. Essentially, these singles tell us that the album is going to be absolutely lethal.
