Doppler Effect - Watch Out !

Released in 2013, this was written in response to a straight up betrayal by someone I was dating. I kept having this strange dream about gasoline being slowly put into my system while I slept with the daytime being filled with planning a BIG BBQ on the Beach the coming weeklend. Once I wrote and recorded the song, the Dream never returned.

Doppler Effect - Boyfriend Barbecue

A celebration of the automobile, a bit cheeky, I know, as I do not have a drivers license and only got as far as my learner's permit when I realized I make a fantastic co-pilot but the role of the driver always eluded me due to a bad eye. As the song goes "Driving is easy...for most".
I made a list of topics that make up the content of many, many songs as I was exploring to see  if there were any patterns to glean and oddly enough cars kind of go hand in hand with the birth of Rock-N-Roll in the 50's. For 3 decades most resemble incredible works of art but something happened in the 80's and cars just got big, boxy, and ugly without a hint of the beauty that I always thought would be a part of the American car culture forever. We used the Bowie/Burroughs cut up technique to create the verse lyrics and topped it all off with Taffy Davenport, from Baltimore, Maryland, providing back-up vocals and teaching us how to play car accident in our spare time.

James Straight recorded the rain storm live while staying with family on Fire Island during the Summer of 84. It was impossible to sleep as the storm was just so intense. So, I took it as a sign and grabbed my trusty cassette deck and a microphone. Shielding myself under an umbrella I sat on the deck and began recording this amazing natural occurance. I had recorded a rain storm from an old film that I'd loop for live shows but capturing this storm that night fit into the breaks beautifully and was a perfect counterpoint to the conflicted feelings expressed by the protagonist of the song.

Everything Will Change

A personal anthem of sorts with a mantra that still rings true even today. Written by James Straight in the early 80's while trying to balance life/work and art/commerce and achieve the goals I had set for myself but as the song says "I can't seem to get what I really want" and here we are. The song was recorded several times with slight changes made each time. This is the final version recorded in the 90's

James Straight's Electronic band, Doppler Effect, explores what Straight calls the encyclopedia of electronic music. Since it's inception in 1981 up to the present the band has explored and incorporated almost all styles of electronica from Ambient to Industrial, Techno, Synth Pop, EBM, House, Dark Wave, Acid, Disco, with a touch of Punk and Funk around thre edges. It all depends on the song as Straight sees his work as mini films or dramas utilizing the whole paint box to achieve the desired effect, his only rule is it must work for the song.
