Michael released his magnificent debut long player Dust & Bone in 2016 (Michael lived in his van for two and a half years whilst recording the album) working with Producer Dan Brown. It features the critically acclaimed ‘Steady And The Stuck (premiered by The Independent) and Revolving Doors co-written with Ben Christophers (Guy Garvey Bat for Lashes) he followed this debut with his stunning sophomore album ‘Salt ‘in 2020 which Atwood praised as “an achingly honest & heartfelt reckoning full of striking vulnerability & intensely intimate, beautiful songwriting.” Michael released his 3rd studio Album ‘How Come You Sleep’, in 2021 recorded with Lucy Rose band member Andrew Stuart-Buttle & mixed by Oliver Baldwin (Aldous Harding, First Aid Kit). ‘‘How Come You Sleep resonates with soaring melodies & glistening string arrangements that add depth & colour. After recently releasing a self-produced covers EP, Michael is now gearing up to release his 4th studio Album, produced & recorded with Luke Potashnick (Gabrielle Aplin, Alberta Cross, Tom The Lion) at the renowned Wool Hall Studios (Van Morrison, Tears For Fears). 

Live 
Michael’s newly formed Live trio set- up features Michael on guitar, keys and harmonica, Alfie Weedon on double bass  & Bv’s and Andrew Stuart-Buttle on violin, mandolin, synths, drum machines & BV’s. The trio frequently lean into the possibilities of their set up with songs featuring shimmering electronic chords and drones, and occasional bursts of controlled feedback or skittering drum patterns.

Michael says of the track.
"Often when confronted with something beautiful, a happy moment, I’m overwhelmed with how ephemeral everything is, thus finding sadness. It’s a vicious cycle. I have this tendency to be able to find the blues in most things (I think the medical term is singer-songwriter). 
I originally wrote In The Light imagining that feeling of being ready to die. It came from a memory of Dad turning to me, around the time of his retirement, and saying 'If I died now I would die a happy man.' Imagining that feeling of being fulfilled to the top, actually turned into the realisation of the song.
This song is the spring in your step as you walk down the road, sun on your face, feeling complete. It’s a list of all the beautiful things achieved, and a tip of the hat to the idea that I came, saw and got the t-shirt." 

Producer Luke Potashnick says of the track: 
Arh man - a real cruiser - again built on a live performance at the Wool Hall - regimented drums and bass, with some floaty overdubs trying to match the dreaminess of the lyric - this one takes you somewhere warm and light for a few!

About the track
‘’I have ADHD and something I struggle with is seeing time pass. This song fell out in a moment of reflection during one of those down days, it was a moment of realisation of how little I take in sometimes. It was a song to commit to memory.’’

Cave Of Memory

In my experience, and I think many people with ADHD can relate, time and memories don't always stick to a straight path. It's like time has a mind of its own, acting all weird and unpredictable. My ADHD brain loves to wander off into daydreams—it's just part of who I am. And sometimes, nostalgia hits me so hard that it's both beautiful and a little sad.

So this whole idea of being a "Freak" is like a dance between different emotions: nostalgia, sadness, and that feeling of being on the outside looking in. But it's not all gloom and doom. There are also moments of clarity and peace, when I become aware of my feelings and learn to accept them.

“I lived in my van for two and a half years to pay for the making of my first record,” casually laughs singer-songwriter Michael Baker. “I moved into the van after a typical period of heartache. I had nowhere to go, but it was pretty good actually!” 

From this, you can gather a lot about the Anglo-French troubadour. Mainly, he takes nothing for granted and lives for his music.  

Spending his childhood near Brighton (where he went to the same school as Rag N’ Bone Man), Michael got his first guitar aged eight after seeing Oasis live and needing to learn ‘Wonderwall’. In his teens, the songs soon started to flow. It wasn’t long before the purity of his voice, the direct rawness of his writing and the sheer scope of his sound found him regular gigs and a devoted fanbase – one that only grew bigger and more in love with the release of his magnificent debut album Dust & Bone. 

A soaring collection of heart-wrenching indie-folk and cinematic sounds, Dust & Bone was recorded with Massive Attack collaborator Dan Brown, and was a staggering first showcase of Baker’s ambition and soulful style. “I’m really proud of the songwriting on that record,” he admits. “I was in such a bad place in my life when I made it, but it got such a great response from the people who heard it.”

Early sessions for Salt started when Baker hit the studio with Dan Brown and Oliver Baldwin, who had recently finished making Aldous Harding’s acclaimed album Party with PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish. While promising Michael says ‘’It felt like I needed more time to experiment than we had scheduled in.” So Baker headed back to record and produce the album with long-time friend Ed Martin. 

After discovering that his childhood home would be empty for a few weeks while his parents were in the process of moving away. He went in and stripped everything away, begged and borrowed all the equipment he needed, crammed the band in, drank a lot of wine, got a little stoned and naturally just flowed through the album – playing all day and all night. The recordings were so impressive, that Baldwin agreed to mix the record at Real World Studios and gave the songs a whole new dimension (as well as inviting Jack White’s pedal steel player Maggie Björklund to play on the album too). 
“I absolutely love artists like Cat Stevens and Bon Iver,” says Baker. Salt is a record that maps Baker’s journey through darkness and vulnerability to something a lot more hopeful. 
Among the key tracks that show Baker’s road to recovery, ‘Baby Books’ was inspired by being in close proximity to someone taking their own life – and totally changing the way he saw the world. Single ‘They Look Just Like They Know’ also deals with how “the mind can be a deadly place” and “feeling trapped in the prison of your own vision”. He’s looking for the sunrise on the horizon, too. Baker’s personal favourite ‘Claire’ celebrates the “the beauty of space in a relationship” and the escapist ecstasy of ‘One Good Damn’ has won over scores of new fans with its feel-good magnetism. 

Salt is a towering accomplishment that will win hearts with its adept handling of love, loss and hope, and there’s more to come. For now though, you’re about to get to know the real Michael Baker. “I feel like I have too much of a personal relationship with anyone who says they like my music,” concludes Baker. “I’ve been getting letters and messages from people saying that my songs have got them through a very hard time, and I don’t know how to reply to them other than as if I’d known them my whole life. That’s the way that I would do it. I hope that my music gives them as much as it’s given me.”

‘Caught in the Crossfire’ is the 2nd single from the forthcoming (recorded in Lockdown) 3rd studio album and is FFO Gregory Alan Isakov, Sufjan Stevens and Devendra Banhart. This album was recorded during this lockdown period 2019 #ClassofAWAL/TGE supported artist Michael Baker has been in the same house as long time friend & Lucy Rose Multi-Instrumentalist and band member Andrew Stuart Buttle. They have used this period to write, record & produce a 10 track album, the Album is mixed by ‘Aldous Harding credited Oliver Baldwin and is the follow up to 8.9 out of 10 Atwood reviewed sophomore album ‘Salt’ which was only released in March this year, a testimony to how prolific Michael is an artist and songwriter and he has already been in to record album 4 with Luke Potashnick (Tom the Lion, Alberta Cross) due out early 2021

‘’Sitting in lockdown thinking how can anything be so hard, so easy, so incredibly sad and so fucking beautiful.As with most of my songs I wrote it feeling sad and looking to the light. I sat up in bed just before sleeping and the whole thing came out in one go. The next day i recorded the whole thing down pretty much as you hear it on the record. For the piano part i wanted to take musicality out of it, so with my hands on the right notes i actually blindfolded myself and felt my way through the track.’’

‘’Houses started with a dusty old synth loop, a vocoder, a guitar and a poem i had knocking around for a while. During lockdown with multi-instrumentalist Andrew Stuart Buttle he took the track and threw sounds of whistling strings, plucked mandochello and ethereal sounds collected together. I wanted to vocals to sound like a whisper in an ear. here are some words on where the lyrics came from.

So as life continued the silence grew… conversations developed from pastimes in playgrounds, to houses with dinner parties. maybe i need to be more political… maybe i need to start reading the newspaper… are we all them same? should i be doing what they are doing? life is so different to how i thought it was gonna be... what is this beauty? what is this depression?
