About Intermezzo D'Anniversaire by Danae Vlasse: This piece is a Theme and Variations on the famous Op118 No2 Intermezzo by  Johannes Brahms. It develops my favorite 8 measure theme from the original work and was specifically composed in the style of Brahms. The second section in this piece is built on specific pitches such that it incorporates a message for the recipient of the commission "Joyeux Anniversaire Karen" ("Happy Birthday Karen").

Winner: MTAC Composers Today 2014 First Place in Composition "Advanced Work" Category.

Winner: Radio Music Awards 2016 "Best Classical Recording" Category.

Haydn's model for monothematicism can be quite a life-saver when time is as short as this; the initial ten-bar subject of the finale contains the seed for pretty much the entire movement.  Not surprisingly in the circumstances, invention tends to give place to pleasantry(probably more so in this than any of the other movements);  still, I quite like the sauntering second subject variant theme, and the way it evolves as it goes.  It contains something of the most uncharacteristic exuberance I felt as I raced the clock for the final double bar (I am neither a competitor nor an adrenaline compulsive in ordinary life), which I reached at 11:58pm by the bedside alarm clock that had kicked the whole thing off for the 7:00am start.

And there you have it; String Quartet No. 29.  It should have been a companion-piece, but the sad fate of its sister quartet has made it by default one of a kind in my output.  I learned two things in the course of its composition.   First, that it is close to impossible to write anything unhappy in the key of B major (how Wagner and Dvořák managed such tragedy and pathos in the Liebestod and the final pages of the 'Cello Concerto I shall never know).  Second, that if one is steeped in music to the point where one's head is a torrent of notes for much of the time already, and if one's primary goal is fluency rather than quality, then marshalling those notes into order in the space of seventeen hours is not so much difficult as just unbelievably hard work.  But I'm glad to have done it; it feels tremendously worthwhile.  When a creative outlet of some sort is important to you, one of the most persistent anxieties is that at some point the ability to organise the impulses will simply cease.  It's nice to be able to prove it to yourself once in a while that it hasn't happened yet.  And I look forward - although not, it has to be said, with any great urgency - to seeing whether I can make it a hat-trick on day 30,000, by which time I shall be eighty-two.

This piece came to me in a single sitting as I imagined a scene in my upcoming fantasy novel, Bloodlust. Rebecca, Alex, and Tristan are spending the evening in the forest, anxiously awaiting the coming morning where they will need to face the human king—and Alex's father. Alex brought with them a lute, as she knows her father enjoys hearing her play and sing, but as she is attempting to practice, she forgets the lyrics to her song, forcing her to hum the melody instead. As she finishes, Rebecca's voice rises from the silence, singing lyrics she made up on the spot as a way to empower Alex to accept her role as the group's leader.

This composition won an Award of Excellence as well as being awarded an honor for the category of "Listener Impact" from the Global Music Awards!  This was also the 2016 1st place winner of the MTAC advanced division Composer's Today competition! This work was also nominated for the 2016 Hollywood Music In Media Awards.

"Ivory quills aquiver with a tail destined to pen:
Dust aflutter, down afloat...
An ailing grace lies mourning, despairing, 
Delirious from the  fragrance of the waterlily's fresh palette of nascent pastels.
Fearful of this night's timeless mistress; 
a muse sinister yet seductive with repose in calling cadence to life's thrashing.

Born 1965, lifelong lover of music.  Have been picking out little tunes from 5, and attempting seriously to compose since 12.  Generally (although not exclusively) happiest writing in the manner of late-18thC/early 19thC, but very happy to listen to pretty nearly any music.  String quartets a speciality, although not entirely sure why.  No plans to give up the day job (secondary school Support for Learning Assistant) or the weekend job (Choirmaster at St. Magnus's Cathedral, Kirkwall).
