Bird Sounds Talbot

yes...I've just got a new toy that converts old tapes into MP3 files...I used to play in bands...and i had to float this one...this is 'Frenzy'...our 'break' - song to play before we'd take a break - taped in my parents garage in 1976 - and listening to this I can't understand why we were never famous...band members and ages  - Joe Taverna (lead guitar) 15 - Mark Herrera (drums) 15 - Michael Crowhurst (rhythm guitar) 15 - Desi Phelan (bass) 17 - what fun and I have hours and hours of these to share ... Another song written in Melbourne with Janet Doolan (she'd be ok that this is up here - there are more lyrics) and then taped when I was living in London in the 80's - these songs are recorded on a single take on a audio cassette tape - this song was part of a musical written for secondary school aged students. It was performed as part of a drama festival in the 80's. I used to busk with this song on the Tube. I've lost most of Janet Doolan's lyrics though - I must find them and float them here. In this version I sing the same lyrics repeatedly - there are 3-4 different verses however - I'm floating the incomplete version however because I like the feel and it's an indication of the song. The pic is one of my paintings.

Another song written and taped when I was living in London in the 80's - it's a song that is about my grandmother - this version of the song is recorded on a 2 track recorder back in Melb in 92 - there's some guitar on this one - I'm playing all of it - The flat in picture is Maitland House (council estate I lived in for a while on the border of Hackney and Bethnal Green)- wrote bits of this there and bits at Windermere Gardens - I've walked through that brown door on the ground floor on the left, behind the green bin and the red and white taxi many times - the guy I shared with at the time was studying architecture (Derek) - inside that little flat the decor changed every week - a bright orange and green bathroom - 1 off designer bookshelves - club lounges - silver I'm remembering something silver - a fire engine red loo - In that flat I was introduced to ground coffee, front loading washing machines, streamed veggies, the benefits of wearing natural fibres and modernism - and Derek also taught me (not in a didactic way)that having hooks under the cupboards in the kitchen is a great way to store and display the coffee cups - thanks Derek

Another song written and then taped when I was living in London in the 80's - these songs are recorded on a single take on a audio cassette tape - they're drafts - notes - I used to take these sort of tapes to band practice and we'd work them up further - and I used to busk them on the tube - Tottenham Crt Rd and Bank Station particularly - some of them are a bit 'angsty' but you know it was the 80's - this one is a little contradictory listening to it now - it's a little fragmented  - the picture is of mosaics in Tottenham Crt Rd Tube Station - where this song was played many times in the 80's - to busk you used to write your name on an advertizement - claim an hour - claim the pitch - and play until you got moved on - I was a teacher in London in the 80's - and played in the Tube 1 day per week - I used to make more money playing self penned tunes than I did for a day of teaching - teachers deserve more pay - and so do buskers

I wish I'd just done the first verse as the third verse here when I taped it ... I do like the line 'we said everything but nothing if you can do that at all' even if I do say so myself. Crowhurst 28 Stepping Out On A Limb

This is recorded on a 4 track recorder in Melbourne in the mid 80's sometime - it's a song played backwards. I think it is the backward version of the other 'hidden' that is housed here. I found this when I was reviewing old audio tapes - I like this one - it was sitting in a drawer and unplanned really - and is an effect of technology rather than intent - song as excess - very Maxine Greene 'Variations on a Blue Guitar' (pp. 141-6). The pic is taken in a Mosque in Istanbul.

Another song written in London (19 Windermere Gardens - Pictured) and then taped in London in the 80's - this song is recorded on a two track recorder back in Melbourne in 91 - I think - they're drafts - notes - I used to take these sort of tapes to band practice and we'd work them up further - and I used to busk them on the tube - Tottenham Crt Rd and Bank Station particularly - some of them are a bit 'angsty' but it was the 80's - you'll be pleased to know that I did manage to smile again - it is interesting listening to these old songs again - so angsty - but I do still like them (even if I do say so myself)

Crowhurst 8 1989 Amsterdam Version 2 Sketch London 1989

This is a 4 track recording done in about 1984 - I listened back to it and thought I'd like to house it here - I was never a lead guitarist really - more of a rhythm, funk, acoustic and riff player - thinking about it now I liked hybridizing - listening to other musicians, responding to them and in the process producing sounds - a dialogue - this tape however houses a monologue. The pic is one of my paintings (2012)
