Lars Bartkuhn - co-founder of influential Frankfurt deep house label Needs Music - seems to have split his brain right down the middle. The Nomad EP — his latest outing on Phonica-related imprint, Utopia — is quite the open market stall: jazz fusion, ambient dabblings and Afro-Caribbean flavours make for a sumptuous listen.

It's a brave and all-encompassing approach from the man who recently stepped out on Neroli Records with the endearing Music for The Golden Age. One which is highlighted most accurately on the the title track. At its zenith, the "Nomad (Full Experience)" soars between Jazzanova-esque rhythms; emotive and considerably light on its toes. Those guitar twangs are plucked from the ripe summer months, making this a strong shoe-in for best background music as you lap up the August rays.

It's out way before that though; early May to be precise. Pre-order it while spring is still springing.

Frits Wentink's next release on his own Bobby Donny label finds him editing some tracks he has been playing on his radio show for a while. They are originally by Vertiqua, a German lo-fi hip hop producer that remains unknown.
The vinyl only record is limited to 500 copies.
All four of these tracks have been edited to make them more suited to the dance floor. The a side comes as an edit that is all about woozy chords and loose, bumpy drums with a rapped vocal stitched deep into the arrangement. It's warm and intake for cosy dance floors.The B1 has organic boom bap drums and kicks, more tape delayed chords and a nice analogue feel all finished with a wordless but beautifully soul-infused vocal.
Last of all, the louche drums of on B2 are coated in vinyl crackle and laced up with more intoxicating and imperfect chords.
This is a perfectly aged combination of hip hop and house that will get any floor bouncing. Limited 12 Inch hand numbered vinyl.

Drum machines, electric pianos, and catchy vocal samples take center stage on Georgi Barrel’s “Rhyme Goes On,” a nostalgia-soaked 12” on the Istanbul/Barcelona-based record label Petra. Joining a catalog of quality releases by Niclas Kannengiesser, Ugur Project, and label owner, Eren Erdol, PTR018 fits nicely into the label’s ethos of releasing timelessly-good music with little care for the boom and bust cycle of passing trends.

On both "Rhyme Goes On" and "Recycle," Barrel works to reinterpret tried-and-true sounds and combine them in new and exciting ways. Its mission accomplished in our minds as both originals (and their remixes) hold their own in our crates next to recent favorites and re-discovered classics. Smart, swift arrangements keep things interesting as sampled raps repeat over jazzy chords, dusty drums, and rolling bass lines. On remix duties for "Recycle" is German veteran Hodini, a Bolting Bits favorite with standout EPs on Money$ex and Wolf Music and previous remixes on Toy Tonics and Tenderpark. Stretching out the original arrangement, Hodini turns "Recycle" into a DJ's dream that rides out a brilliantly simple groove that does away with the original vocal in favor of sultry chords and steady drums.

For the rework of the title track, Petra stayed in-house, tapping up-and-comer Kerem Akdag to add some synth-laden goodness to the rough and raw original. By subduing the original vocal sample, Akdag lets his synthesizers do the talking. Lush pads, subtle bass, and delay-soaked leads come together in a compelling arrangement that begs for a replay after its reasonably quick runtime. The various elements weave together to make every changeup feel like a familiar surprise as they take turns leading the track.

After a short break Sheffield based Moment Cinetique return in 2019 with their first vinyl release, with an EP from fast-rising Icelandic producer Intr0beatz including a remix from London's House prodigy Cody Currie.

Intr0beatz experienced a quick rise to the forefront of House music through 2018 with releases on labels including fellow Icelandic natives Lagaffe Tales gaining support from DJs such as XXXY, Black Loops, Carlo and more. The Kusk EP displays his trademark sound of deep grooves punctuated by disco highlights and rich synths, with all three three original tracks combining lush pads, intricate keys, energetic grooves and analogue synth work to create an infectious, high-quality release. Cody Currie also enjoyed a huge 2018 with releases on Classic, Southern Fried and many more.

Cody uses the loop and groove bass of Intr0's 'Mandolinio' then adds jazz keys and stabs to twist the track into his own unique style.

Kidzen is an alias of heavyweight Sydney musician, composer and bass player Cameron Undy. Nominated for the 2006 Australian Jazz Artist of the Year award, Undy’s history of playing over the last 15 years reads like a who’s who of jazz, having recorded and shared the stage with greats including Mike Nock, Sam Rivers and Don Pullen.

Cameron has also been closely involved with artists fusing jazz with abstract dancefloor beats.
