Stockholm-based pianist/composer Shida Shahabi follows up last year’s ‘Lake On Fire’ OST with the release of another short film score,  for Swedish director Maria Eriksson-Hecht’s ‘Alvaret’. Stepping away from her piano entirely, the EP’s five tracks are performed by Shida on electric bass and synth, alongside the cello of regular collaborator Linnea Olsson. It was mixed by Hampus Norén and mastered by Francesco Donadello, and will be released as a digital EP via FatCat’s 130701 imprint on November 26th. A beautifully rich and atmospheric soundtrack, ‘Alvaret’ posts further confirmation of Shida’s special talent and growing reputation as a composer of the highest order.   

Produced by Lars Von Trier’s Zentropa company, Eriksson-Hecht’s ‘Alvaret’ is a powerful, stunningly shot 20-minute study on the aftermath of tragedy and a young girl’s resilience and determination to hold her remaining family together. The film runs short on dialogue but deep in emotional honesty and integrity as it probes the depths of care and despair. Perfectly in step with the director’s vision, Shida’s score avoids tugging at hearstrings via the obvious tropes of sentimentality, instead pulling back to a cooler, more measured and complex emotional distance, and an intimation of the barren, low-lying island landscape in which the film is set.

Last year in and out of lockdown, Dupé made an album about his great-aunt Margaret, who spent her entire adult life in service at Abbotsford Convent. Margaret’s life story was both ordinary, and even more so in hindsight extraordinary. She lived a life that would be considered extreme today… a life without freedom. Reflecting upon her life proved to be humble, emotional, and fertile ground for 21st-century perspective whilst exploring narrative and biography through music.

While the music serves as most uninhibited expression of Margaret’s story, these writings from Dupé help provide further insight into Margaret’s life: 

Margaret was my grandmother’s sister, I didn’t know my grandmother but I met Margaret several times as a child. We would drive all day from Canberra to Melbourne from before light to after, to spend time with our relatives since both my parents were born and raised there.

Visiting this diminutive elderly woman with white hair in a bun and black habit and large crucifix was a strange procedure since she was clearly a prisoner in this convent. With both of her parents dead, her sisters put her into Abbotsford Convent as a grieving nineteen year old unwed mother.

A nun would sit at our table listening to the conversation to remind us all of that fact. Margaret was a “bad girl” and as such had been kept away from the children and reforming girls that were also in the convent. She existed within this small village of impounded women, day by day through two world wars, Vietnam and the death of her entire family. She slept in a dormitory, rose at five for prayers, worked in a laundry all day and had only one possession, a secret radio to listen to the races and footy. Her dormitory was in a building within a grey concrete courtyard which was gated and had one tree within it whilst restricted beautiful grounds lay all around.

As a teenager, Margaret was working for a married farmer in the western districts and had fallen pregnant to him (I don’t know if it was consensual) and had a child which she named Eileen after her favourite sister. The child was taken away and when she had another child a year later with the same man, she also called her Eileen (probably believing the first child had died). The first Eileen lived and went into the world equally oblivious to her mother’s plight and the second Eileen died after birth and was quietly buried in a suburb in Melbourne where Margaret would be buried 65 years later.

When she arrived at the convent, Margaret was given a new name and the gate closed behind her for the rest of her life. My father loved this wiry rebel (named Jock by him for her jockey-like stature) who lived both a hard and a sheltered life. Researching and reflecting on Margaret’s life made me deeply consider gender, class, compassion and the Catholic Church as connected to my family and more broadly. The archives from the convent where she lived for over six decades provided no trace of her existence except for a record of being slightly ill twice in the 1960s… no photographs, no accounts of any activities or interests.

In recent years London has become an epicenter for experimental, visionary jazz. On this unique session, two of the finest exponents of the London jazz scene, Tamar Osborn and Al MacSween, join forces with members of the celebrated Danish psychedelic underground - Jonas Munk, Jakob Skøtt and Martin Rude – to create a heady sonic brew. On this first volume of material there's everything one could hope for in such a collaboration: sonically it summons the free flowing euphoria of Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders' work in the late 1960s and early 1970s. But there's also a focus on rhythmic energy and vitality that calls to mind the grooviest krautrock or electric period Miles Davis, as well as a healthy dose of electronic experiments. 

Throughout these five tracks the quintet paints with a colourful palette. Tamar Osborn shifts between baritone sax and flutes. Keyboardist Al MacSween doesn't just stick with the tried and true electric piano - an instrument which he masters - but showers these tracks in analog synths and effects as well. Add to that the fact that Jonas Munk took a somewhat creative approach when editing and mixing these pieces – with effects boxes wired in, occasionally giving the mix a dubby, ambient atmosphere. Similar to Munk and Skøtt's main project, Causa Sui, digging into the past becomes a vehicle to open up the future. What the quintet has created in these sessions is something quite unique.

Julian Bohn is a German pianist and producer based in the Netherlands. He creates genre-crossing music for adventurous listeners longing for authenticity and acceptance. His music is carefully created and curated, like a soundtrack for your everyday life. 

Feels Like Home, his upcoming debut album, was crafted in collective solitude of the lockdown and still represents a celebration of collaboration, with an international line-up of 11 musicians from the United States, England, Germany and the Netherlands who recorded in their individual home studios.  The songs are brimming with warmth, while poignantly addressing some of the themes all of us were confronted with last year: loneliness, belonging and having a place to come home to, and fear in the face of a growing climate crisis. At times the music feels wide open, moments later becoming close and intimate, as if the musicians are playing in your living room. You always feel the curiosity and openness of a bandleader that rejects being bound by certain genre lines and prefers to channel his younger self for inspiration, trying to create music that gives him the same exhilarating feeling his music-hungry 17-year-old self got when first falling in love with the craft. 

At the moment he’s putting together a live band to transform the music into a live experience.  As a producer, Julian Bohn is currently working with artists like FRÉ, XILLAN and the Ugandan singer Maurice Kirya.
