Written by the descendants of the rebel Korah, who did not follow after the pattern of their forefather, likely sometime between 1025-950 BC. 

The Sons of Korah were the few faithful descendants of the rebellious figure Korah, who rears his head in the Book of Numbers. 

Korah rebelled against Moses and Aaron’s leadership, leading to a divine punishment that included the earth swallowing him, his followers, and (it says) all of his household. 

However, in God’s divine graciousness, some of his offspring, known as the Sons of Korah, remained faithful and were not counted among the household of Korah when God utterly destroyed them from the face of the Earth, and they continued to play significant roles in Israelite society.

As gatekeepers, they were responsible for maintaining order and guarding sacred spaces such as the tabernacle or temple. 

It was not too small a thing for them, and they rejoiced being counted worthy to serve the Lord.

Their faithfulness and adherence to their responsibilities demonstrate their dedication to upholding the sanctity of worship.

They are most notably associated with musical traditions and the composition of psalms. 

The inclusion of the Sons of Korah’s psalms in the biblical canon signifies their recognized importance and spiritual depth, their lasting impact on the worship practices of ancient Israel, as well as the importance of remaining faithful in spite of regrettable family ties.

For no matter whose ancestor you are, the Lord is always ready to accept all who are willing to call upon him with a sincere heart and beg for his mercy.

And from each of us should flow our own songs of renewed purpose and redemption out of a heart of humility as we remember the fallen state from which He raised us and the redemption that we experience through His grace. This was certainly the case for the sons of Korah.

Give Ear to My Voice

1 O Lord, I call upon you; hasten to me!     Give ear to my voice when I call to you!
2 Let my prayer be counted as incense before you,     and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!
3 Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;     keep watch over the door of my lips!
4 Do not let my heart incline to any evil,     to busy myself with wicked deeds in company with men who work iniquity,     and let me not eat of their delicacies!
5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness;     let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head;     let my head not refuse it. Yet my prayer is continually against their evil deeds.

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,     ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;     worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
