02 Plastic Venus

“Crystal” is the 5th studio album by Passage, a musical project from Québec, Canada, that was released on May 17, 2024. However, this new album is the 3rd in the musical turnaround the band began in 2022, with the release of “Voyage”. “Crystal” takes the musical experience even further than its two not-so-distant predecessors, "Voyage" and “Oblique” by being very close by moments to film soundtracks with its neo-classical feel, 
thanks in large parts to the omnipresent piano, viola and orchestration.

The concept behind the album "Crystal" depicts the sad soul of a man, now elderly, realizing that time has passed so quickly. He recalls the sweet memories of his childhood right up to the present, with all its regrets and broken promises. Proud of what he has achieved in life, but with a deep sadness that has always been ingrained in him, without anyone noticing, because he has never let anything show in front of others.

“I Was Not Magnificent" is a song that was born from one of the most challenging and intimate moments in our journey as a band, and it carries with it a deep, personal resonance for all of us. It’s a track that speaks directly to the healing power of music, especially when facing life's most difficult battles. At its heart, the song is about the realisation that music holds a strength far beyond our own—it can heal, uplift, and provide a sense of purpose when everything else feels uncertain.

The song features words spoken by our bass player, Ben Walsh, whose experience with Chronic Kidney Disease has been a defining part of both his life and this album. Diagnosed in 2021, Ben began undergoing dialysis three times a week to keep his body functioning. It’s a gruelling and often exhausting process—physically, emotionally, and mentally. There have been countless moments when Ben, in the midst of his treatments, has turned to music for solace and strength. Music became a lifeline during those times when it felt like his body was betraying him. 

In "I Was Not Magnificent,” we reflect on how music was something larger than ourselves—a force that could provide healing when everything else seemed beyond control. We speak of the moments when music offered us a kind of strength we couldn’t find within ourselves, when it reminded us that there was something bigger than our own pain. The words in the track are raw and reflective, a quiet acknowledgment of how, in the face of illness or struggle, music has a power that transcends the physical. It’s a reminder that, even in our darkest hours, we are connected to something much greater than our individual struggles.

The title, "I Was Not Magnificent," speaks to the vulnerability and humility that come with illness and struggle. Through music, we found a sense of peace, a sense of something beautiful and healing that helped us navigate the hardest moments. The song is not just about music’s power, but about the realisation that sometimes, when we feel the weakest, we can find the most strength through the things that move us.

"I Was Not Magnificent” is a tribute to the power of music to heal, to bring clarity in times of confusion, and to remind us of our own strength when we need it most. It’s a song about vulnerability and strength, about learning to let go of our own limitations and trusting in something bigger to carry us through.

June In Winter throws down guitar, drums, synth, and keys the way tides throw driftwood: not randomly, but with some slow, stubborn logic you’re too human to decode. Nothing fights for space. Nothing shouts. It just moves — in that deep rhythm underneath everything, the one we pretend not to hear while we’re busy making noise about more important things.
There’s comfort in how Moment doesn’t care if you’re paying attention.  Somewhere between post-rock’s patience and math rock’s controlled fidget, Moment lets you drift just far enough to forget the shoreline — and by the time you reach for it, it’s already too late.
