I always loved listening to music,
Rock, blues, and even country music.
There was a fucking asshole in my neighborhood,
Who thought he was the ultimate authority,
He would laugh and look down on me for listening to country music.

I used his words to wipe my ass,
I kept on listening to my music, I was a tough son of a bitch,
Later on, I would run into him again.
I didn't understand English but I listened to John Denver,
Until my brother translated his songs for me,
And I fell in love with his poetry.
I wanted to know more, to read and understand,
How such beautiful poetry
Could make you shiver without understanding the words.

And I kept on walking through life,
Collecting beautiful songs,
Until I dared to write my own,
I sang them for myself and they made me happy.

But one day I ran into that asshole again,
This time he invited me to smoke in the square,
With another bastard who wanted to start a magazine,
I had had an accident that changed my life.

I smoked and it was the longest trip of my life,
It was unconsciousness with consciousness,
It felt like I was kind of dying,
And at the same time, it was like I was being born.
It was the first time I had ever smoked,
They said it was some good Paraguayan weed.

And I was there in the middle of these bastards
Who listened to Lucas Prodan and drank gin,
Me, with my trip at a thousand, I laughed at them,
With the guy who wanted to start the magazine,
While other guys were rehearsing
They wanted to be rock stars and famous,
Here where I live
Dreaming doesn't cost a thing.

Until I came back to myself
And rock and roll said to me, "Welcome back,
I'm glad you remembered me."

My faith had been shattered after feeling it empty,
But I was writing my poems,
And I kept listening to my beautiful songs,
They weren't just country anymore, now they were blues,
Rock and roll, and my siblings' records,
The ones I listened to when I was little,
Genesis, Pink Floyd, Camel, Deep Purple,
Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles,
And I could just keep going down my list,
Listening to so many beautiful songs,
Accumulating their messages and their sounds,
Feeding my soul and leading by example
On how to write about rage and pain,
Or to be existential, or to talk about darkness.

Because in the end, we are like beautiful songs,
Some sound rough and others sound lost,
The good thing is that life always gives you the option,
Always, to change the harmony,
If you want to sound in a major key,
Or if you just want to sound sad, you choose a minor key.

That's what music in life is all about,
Immerse yourself in a sea of experiences,
If there's a song you don't like,
It's simple, you change the dial or find another song.
Look, your life is like a beautiful song,
If you don't like how it sounds, don't feel obligated,
Change, don't be afraid, because life invites you
To be like those beautiful songs,
Whichever you want, blues, pop, or jazz,
You are free to change.
