Interpretation of "Paris" by Meredith Monk

Starting with a hard copy of the score, I took a photograph with my phone, imported into software that converts scores to MIDI (with some obvious gaps and errors), imported the tracks into Ableton, and fed it into the "Tunnel System" I'm working on for piano music interpretation.

A beautifully warm, diverse and wiggly mix from Oakland, California based Wonja (@wonj). Alongside being a talented dj & avid record collector, Wonja makes up one half of Motoko & Myers with her partner Dan. 

I'm constantly impressed by the wide-spanning range of genres, styles and moods that make up Wonja's mix catalogue - always new and always fresh.  For this mix, she's put together a playful and eclectic mix of glitch, groove and interesting soundscapes.

Dan Letson (@the-globule) is someone who's been present in the same online sphere as me for a long time. He had a mix series called The Globule of Non-Standard. He has his DJML releases on the likes of Jacktone and F T D. He has his Do/While series with @wonj, a sort of successor to their Herzog Hideout weekly livestream. The couple also produce as Motoko & Myers, and have released an album for Open Hand Real Flames, a 7" for Future Times as well as contributing a track to Bandcloud's 2019 compilation Missives. ON TOP OF ALL THAT, Dan maintains a blog called Grippers' Tips (@grippers-tips), "a celebration of overlooked and under-appreciated music of all kinds". Not unlike Bandcloud, he gets together music that has gone under the or a radar for any number of reasons. He finds obscure records and rips them; he seeks out brand new releases and shares purchase links. All with the same aim as me, sharing music with the world.

Last year I asked him if he would be interested in putting together a mix of music from the GT archives. We talked about it briefly and then early 2020 he sent me this. He sent me a blurb that you can read below but in short it's all self-published material found online. Pretty simply. It's extremely broad in  its scope but he pulls it together for a fascinating and hugely enjoyable listen.

"This mix is a celebration of my favorite online-music phenomenon: the "DIY reissue." Bandcamp and other artist-centering platforms are a godsend for emerging acts, but they serve another vital role for those whose careers reach back into the pre-digital era. While deluxe vinyl reissues generate massive press for certain lost discographies, there's an entire economy of defunct labels and persistent weirdos taking their recorded history into their own hands. Expired contracts, homemade vinyl rips, and unpublished archives bringing obscure sounds from the CD era to the post-streaming 'net.

"The tracks here were originally released between 1988 and 2005 and are all available for legal gripping at the included links below."
