Colleen & Brian's Theme

Fiona Apple's main idea for "Jonathan" is full of chromaticism and lots of major/minor seconds. I love this song because it is beautiful and uneasy with a dreamlike lilt. (Two against three is always perfection.) The overall tonality shifting from major to minor is overwhelmingly tempestuous and raw. I took these ideas to their most extreme with fast, scurrying passages, heavy semi-atonal sections, all blended with snippets of romantic/impressionistic musings.

Fantasy On A Melody By Fiona Apple - "Jonathan"

Shara Worden, the voice/composer/artist behind My Brightest Diamond, has a voice unlike any other. "Dragonfly" showcases this amidst layers of guitars, drums, and strings. The main melody is so simple and scalar. I love the sadness, yearning, and transformation she breathes into the song. Musing on these feelings, I took her melody and kept it relatively simple and slow in this fantasy. I wanted to reflect on and feature her beautiful melodies, rather than distort them too much.

Fantasy On A Melody By My Brightest Diamond - "Dragonfly"

The Dirty Projectors are one of my all time favorite bands. Compositionally, they experiment and push the boundaries (if there are any) of indie rock music. They are unafraid, raw, and fucking mental. I am constantly inspired by their textures, meters, timbres, and sheer genius. "Offspring Are Blank" has a very modal, distinctive melody. They combine that melody with hip-hop-esque grooves and noisy guitars. With those in mind, I wanted to convey the rhythmic syncopations and raucous guitars in my fantasy with lots of low-end playing, "harmonic-minory" riffs, and lots of slamming down on the keyboard.

Fantasy On A Melody By The Dirty Projectors - "Offspring Are Blank"

Andrew Bird has been an inspiration to me for quite some time. His complex, yet simple violin loops are beautiful and thought-provoking. I've always loved how he can create different worlds so effortlessly. Lately, he has been getting back to his folk/bluegrass roots. "Pulaski At Night" is a simple folk tune about his (and my) hometown of Chicago. I think I put "Pulaski At Night" on repeat for about 4-5 hours when I first bought it…. That being said, I knew that I had to include this song on this album. The violin melody is probably one of my favorite melodies he's ever written, so I used it as the main idea throughout my variation. It sneaks in intermittently, amidst rustling chords. As it progresses, I wanted it to sound stranger and stranger, yet still familiar. It reappears at the very end, simply, to close the piece just as it began.

I had the pleasure of playing with my extraordinarily talented violinist and friend Echae Kang. Here is a brief description of the piece: This is a piece about a fool that has a knack for searching for romance in the wrong place every time. Still, his hope remains: perhaps it is in the treetops, the rooftops, the cupboard, the attic, underneath the bed, the fireplace, the pillowcase, the pantry, the hall, the wardrobe, the chimney, inside the washing machine, inside a shoe, in the garden, or sunken in the sofa. This is about an act of foolish whimsy, and dedicated to somewhat of a fool. How foolish.

Goodnight Sweet Stranger - For Violin and Piano

Excerpts from "Lifted"

This is a combination of live/midi instruments set to a scene from the new "King Kong" by Peter Jackson for a project a while back at Berklee College of Music. The music follows the monster and the damsel in distress as they meet in frigid NYC and begin to dance on the ice in central park.

Somber/Heartfelt

This is music set to the second half of the King Kong clip (the new Peter Jackson version) where, just after the monster and the damsel in distress are dancing on the ice, the army moves in and the monster is sent on a chase through NYC to save itself and his love! Sequenced in DP with vienna ensmble/kontakt/reason instances as plug-ins.

Adventure/Chase

This is an excerpt from a short animated film I scored for a competition. It was a dark, but heroic story about voodoo dolls and how they exact revenge and save their friend. 

This features Echae Kang on the violin, beautifully I might add!
