This is the first time I made something decent enough I bothered to record with my modular synthesizer. I am still very much learning.

Basically, Chord Organ is being triggered by Pam's to cycle through some chords, which run through an envelope. The root note is modulated by Mimetic Digitalis, with is multed into the S&H of my Neutron, and out to be quantized by Scales. Scales out A goes to v/oct of a 3340 oscillator, and a saw goes into v/oct of Monsoon in regular Clouds setting. Out B goes into v/oct of Rings. Scales also triggers a grain in Monsoon.  Rings goes into a Zlob SVF on low pass, the filter is also modulated by another 3340 oscillator with a saw exponentially FMing an attenuated sine wave. There's a basic kick and hihat I threw in as well. Pam's clocks everything with some divisions and Euclidian rhythms. ADSR & VCAs as you would expect. One channel for the delayed chords, Clouds, Rings, kick, and high hat respectively. I would have loved to sidechain a low saw in behind the kick but I ran out of VCAs. This is the first time I've used almost all my patch cables, and made something that didn't sound like complete muddy ass.

Bloom is sequencing Chord v2, chord CV goes into v/oct and melody into Chord's lead input. The chords go through a low pass filter and that's about it. The melody is split into two paths, one excites Rings and then goes through a low pass filter. The other stays relatively clean, which is sent via mult to Monsoon as well as a FX Aid on a clocked delay algorithm. Both of these also get smashed together along with CV I have modulating Chord's wave tables from NLC Helvetica Scenario and Neuron which provides the glitched out degraded mess at the end. I use Pam's to modulate the root input on Bloom's lead, and Zlob Diode Chaos wiggles the Chord's low pass. Everything else I modulated with my disgusting human fingers, mostly just the other LPG cutoff, Ring's brightness/damp/position, Monsoon's reverb/feedback/etc, and wet/dry on the delay. I might slap some Apollo 11 moon mission chatter in the background because this gives me space vibes but it's 0545 and I should be sleeping.

It's -14F and it's really pretty outside after a blizzard, so I made something to reflect these wintery vibes as the sun is going down at 4pm. 

Notes:
Pams sends some euclidean triggers to clock Cellular Automata, which is sending pitch CV to Chordv2. Each of Chord's discreet outputs goes to Percall, and Chord's mix output goes into Monsoon which is in looping delay mode. Cellular Automata spits out gates which trigger Percall as well as the strum input of a single bell tone from Rings, all of which gets some reverb from FX Aid. Rings also gets thrown into Monsoon as well. Sloths modulates everything - Chord's waveform, quality & voicing; Percall's envelopes; and Monsoon's density, size, & texture. Monsoon also gets a trigger now and then from Cellular Automata to nudge it into weird clock divisions every so often (I'm pretty sure).

I really wanted to play with Cellular Automata as the main brains of a patch, as well as work on taming Monsoon and refine the technique of sending Chord's outputs into Percall, which is something I do a lot.

I do almost nothing physically wiggling this patch. It's mostly just pressing start/stop on PNW to give musical phrases a chance to breathe, and towards the end I cranked up the dry/wet on the reverb. Even with everything stopped Monsoon will perpetually come back to life. I listened to it for about 30 minutes and I don't think it would have ever stopped.

Left Hand Bell

I rewatched Divkid's original Rings video and wanted to spend some time getting more familiar with it. I've also been listening to a lot of drone to fall asleep so I wanted to try a bass drone as well. I really tried to keep things simple with just two voices.

Zlob's Diode Chaos provides all the pitch CV, which is quantized by o_C and sent to Rings and Chordv2. Rings is in quadphonic sympathetic strings mode and gets most of the triggers. I created a rhythm of sorts by sending various clock divisions from Pam's into a sequential switch which alternated how fast Rings is strum. Diode Chaos also modulates Rings' position. This is fed into clouds, which I think is still in looping delay mode. Diode Chaos spits out a trigger every so often which freezes clouds and also triggers and envelope for Clouds' feedback. I adjust wetness and reverb myself throughout the recording.

Chord gets the same pitch CV just shifted down, less notes, and less triggers. It's then sent into Zlob SVF on low pass, and then into FX Aid for even more reverb. A torpor sloth modulates Chord's waveform, and an apathy sloth modulates the cutoff on the filter. I think the reverb is greyhole light but looking at the algorithm it's showing reverb shimmer in dual delay... Who knows.

The piece is mostly just Diode Chaos doing its thing while I fiddle with wet/reverb on Monsoon and a few parameters of the FX Aid. It was nice to have a better idea of what *exactly* I am making Rings do, as well as a cool way to make a drone. o_C is new to me as well, really liked playing with it.

More experiments with Rings' external input (inspired by this amazing video by The Unperson: https://youtu.be/lo6UvBhzNP4) and just trying to keep things relatively simple. 

QuBit Bloom sends a sequence to a 3340 oscillator as well as QuBit Chord. The 3340 sends out a sawtooth wave through a Noisereap Anomaly filter on "Bad"pass (bandpass with a broken wavefolder, which makes it a really interesting filter) to the external input of Rings, and Chord plays up a fifth. The other channel of Bloom sends a different, much slower sequence into Rings' v/oct input. From there Rings goes into Clouds, and then out. Chord goes through FX Aid onReverb Transmitter Warp setting, although I'm just now realizing I didn't send it out in stereo and I'm kicking myself for it. Oh well. Sloths modulates Rings' position, dampening, and shape - as well as Clouds' position and texture. Oh also the cutoff of the Anomaly. Also every time the 2nd channel of Bloom sends out a gate, it triggers Clouds to freeze, and sends an envelope by way of Percall to increase the wetness on clouds at the same time.

End of Thought

This is a cover of Coronal Mass by the fantastic Youtube channel The Drone Zone, AKA Scott Ampleford (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jkci5U5TV7A&t=1382s). I recreated it based on watching the video and digging through the comments to glean more information he was able to recall about this particular patch. It's all done with the Behringer Neutron, and then I added a ton of Black Cloud reverb via FX Aid XL. Mine differs a bit as in the back half of this recording I started messing with the delay on the Neutron to get even more screaming feedback textures.

I performed this live at my friend's (https://soundcloud.com/rfinz) CD release party "Spring Ephemeral" (which you can purchase here: https://dutchmansbreeches.bandcamp.com/album/spring-ephemeral-2), along with a few other tracks only a few of which I was able to rerecord to my satisfaction.  I had never performed live with my eurorack before and it went very well and I am glad to have had the opportunity! I hope you enjoy this solid 20 minutes of droning while you do some work, fall asleep, or just vibe. Probably at least 20 of the views from the original video come from me, as I often listen to it to help me fall asleep after working long night shifts.

This is another "cover" of a 3 module challenge patch I found on Youtube by Comparative Irrelevance. I also added the bird and water noises and I'm pretty sure I ran those through Monsoon since they sound a little trippy. Spring Arps

This patch centers around NonLinear Circuit's 8-Bit Cipher, which is basically a shift register with 4CV outputs and 8 gate outputs. The main voice is supplied by ELC System's haXOR, which is a super rad module I built when he announced the start of his company on Reddit and was offering free panels & PCBs, and being the DIY addict I am I was fortunate enough to scoop one up. I usually use it for snare/percussive sounds but tonight during some experimentation I found a way to really make it shine.

Basically, I'm sending a clock to 8-Bit Cipher which is being modulated via an LFO to make it do its thing. One of the CV outs is quantized and sent to the haXOR, which is then sent into a Zlob SVF. The low pass output is then patched into Rings' input and sent over to Monsoon. This results in a cool somewhat percussive droning bassline. The high pass output goes into my FX Aid XL running some delay algorithm and that is sent off every so often via a VCA/envelope, which is the high frequency glitchy stuff you hear every now and again. Another CV output from 8-Bit Cipher modulates the filter, and a random gate from 8-Bit Cipher pings the filter to add even more of a percussive feel.

I used a 3rd CV output from the 8-Bit Cipher to create the two melodic phrases with a Qu-Bit Chordv2. Chord has 5 outputs - Root, third, fifth, and seventh which are all sent to a sequential switch that is triggered by - you guessed it - another gate out from the 8-Bit Cipher. These are sent to the FX Aid every so often with another VCA/envelope. Chord also has a mix output, which is sent into the BBD of my Neutron, and triggered less frequently with a VCA/envelope. So those are the 2 main voices of this patch, but really the haXOR is the one doing the heavy lifting.

NLC Sloths and Zlob Diode Chaos modulate everything, such as the BBD time (which results in the shifting doppler effect of the mixed chord), the brightness, dampening, and position on Rings, and yet another 8-Bit Cipher gate hits the strum input whenever. Sloths and Diode Chaos also modulate Monsoon's position, density, and texture, and another gate from 8-Bit Cipher triggers the freeze function often.

Percussion is patched via a clock divider for the kick and low tom (Befaco Kickall and NLC Tinkle), and 8-Bit Cipher fires off the high and middle tom of Tinkle.

I fiddled some knobs here and there to introduce/mute various voices and effects. I stop the clock towards the end to enjoy haXOR's drone through Rings/Monsoon. I am always forgetting how amazing a well modulated Monsoon patch can continue to sing without much of an input as long as the modulation keeps going. All "mixing" was done on the synthesizer and recorded directly into my computer, the only editing I do is to trim the recording and put in a fade in and fade out. Unfortunately I also got some clipping because I am trying a new way of getting sounds from synth to computer but oh well.

Myositis Ossificans

I haven't had much time to focus on my hobbies lately and I have been "not thriving", so tonight I set aside time to dick around with my synth. 

I built the 4MS Sampler and Looping Delay before my honeymoon, I think? Never had the chance to use them until tonight. So I tried to focus on using those.

I'm playing stock samples off the sampler at a slow speed and sending it through the resonator input of Rings. Damn near every parameter of rings is modulated with Sloths. The output goes to its own stereo channel on my mixer. I also take the sample and send it into Monsoon, which again goes to its own stereo channel on my mixer. I also send the sample output into the looping delay through a bandpass filter and send it to its own channel on the mixer, panned right. A copy of the delay is sent into my FX aid on "reverb cloud" algorithm, which is like Big Sky. That goes to its own channel on the mixer, panned left. I really tried to focus on making something with a wide stereo spread and lots of delay effects. 

The last "voice" is BBC Radio sent into the NLC Delay No More. Sometimes you might catch a few words, but mostly it sounds like a Delay No More - tons of screaming feedback and the sound a heavy duty zipper on the outside of a tent would make if you were tripping on acid. I love it. I still don't fully understand how it works, but I can fiddle with the knobs enough to make it do stuff with a modicum of control. Very engaging module.

Every time the sampler reaches the end of a sample it sends a trigger out to restart it, and I used this trigger to clock a S&H, which modulates the sample being played. Unfortunately this takes forever since each sample pitched down ends up being pretty long. Towards the end I did all sorts of stuff like speeding up the clock, removing the cable controlling the sample completely and adjusting the sample myself, and smashing the reverse button randomly.

I spent like 6 hours playing with this patch but it only felt like 2. Hopefully you find it relaxing, or focusing, or just the right kind of background noise idk. I listen to drones to fall asleep, usually. My wife is not a fan.

Dark Matter Bath

Some guy who likes synthesizers. This is where I put recordings of sounds I make with my modular synth.
