The idea of knowledge is questionable. A human beings we do not possess data and faculty to truly know anything. We are proficient at producing vague approximations that satisfy our perceptions, which are extremely limited at best.

A Meditation For Light

Enchanted Algorithms is an excerpt from a MAX patch titled, “an Eternal Song”, which is a generative work intended to play indefinitely. 

Emergence, the idea that a generative work may yield unexpected and desirable results greater than the product of the input, seems at work in this patch. Sometimes it starts out rather flat and remains uneventful. At other times, however, combinations occur that are quite surprising and seem present throughout the duration. Just the right sets of combinations suggest Asimov’s notion of the “ghost in the machine”.  Enchanted Algorithms is the result of capturing one of these occurrences.

Movement without energy consumption... without causing heat... flying in the face of the 2nd law of thermodynamics... "Laws" are a matter of fleeting points of view.

Beyond Context

In the writing of these words context is created, which is the antithesis of their intention. How is one to proceed?

Admonition: Accept no accumulation of experience including the words on this page. Accept no authority… especially in these words. For in the instant we accept the thoughts of anyone, including our selves, we enter into structures and subsequent trappings of belief… thus laying the context upon which our illusory self-view is imagined.

Consider these words and then release them like exhaled air. Likewise, if there is a perceived value… a current stance, drop it like a bad habit and move on. Stances ultimately limit our consciousness in breadth and scope relegating us to mere shadows of our selves.

Accepting superficial contexts… cultural, spiritual, intellectual, psychological, and so on, magnetically binds us to who and what we “think” we are. Human being fights and is willing to die to protect and extend the contexts upon which these projected identities are predicated. Is this never-ending cycle of humanistic activity truly beneficial? Or is it utterly divisive, violent, and destructive?

Can one stand so completely free of context as to accept no such filtration of perception? Immense human energies are spent toward creating and concretizing contexts from which to act, perceive… to live. Layers upon layers of context are accumulated over time until all is obscured and precluded by their influences.

What is music devoid of title, lyric, and re-cognition?

Consider these words and then abandon them like the past experience they now are.

In Remembrance of the Sands

Hypnagogia
The transitional state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep is referred to as hypnagogia. Though there seem to be widely varied reports of the experience, it is submitted here that if the mind is quiet, it becomes a venue for deep relaxation, restfulness, and  creativity. The challenge is to maintain the state instead of continuing into sleep. It  is said that Thomas Edison often napped in a chair with ball bearings in his hands to assist in maintaining a hypnagogic state. If the ball bearings dropped, the sound would awaken the inventor, and he would then return to the creative state just before sleep. 
After composing Hypnagogia, it was apparent that it is conducive to sleep. It is not monotonous, nor is it dull and repetitive… quite the opposite. In this composition it seems that complex frequency combinations and interconnecting rhythmic patterns conspire to induce sleep and, if the listener can delay the ascent into sleep, a uniquely creative state of mind.
