self development

I created this track back in 2003 when I was in high school. I was using a Casio SK-1, a Roland MC-09, and a Yamaha Portatone keyboard, running them individually through my Pentium II PC to the line-in on the Turtle Beach sound card in came with. I also made some loops in ReBirth 2.0, then looped, arranged, and mixed everything in ACID Music 3.0.

Ahhh those were the days!

Here it is, about a month after completion, the remix I did for Souleye's "PPPPPPowerup!" compilation for the game VVVVVV (which I found to be insanely difficult).

This is a documentation of works between 2006 and 2007, working at a gas station and attending a community college where I grew up. This album captures the last page of this chapter of my my life.

"All Control" somehow garnered some popularity over the years on its own, the original track not being on any album, but a relatively obscure netlabel compilation called "Of Men And Machines" between rec72 and Audiovisual Theorem.  (found here: http://rec72.net/?p=251)

Some friends from here in Chicago and across the pond were kind enough to offer their own virtuosic and imaginative takes on this strange track, coming together to make this EP - all organized by Marko Medkour at Rec72.

This includes my third self-remix of this track. I really shouldn't remix it anymore...

Room 101 - Viewer Discretion (Professor Kliq Remix)

This is my attempt at Zoe's remix... with only about a week and a half to work with it amidst a million other things going on, this is the best I could come up with given the amount of time. For inspiration, I looked at several pictures of Zoe and focused a great deal on her eyes... though her voice is sweet, smooth and dark, there is a distinct sense of conviction in her eyes. There is something quite massive about it, too. It's this that I kept in mind when making this remix, while still trying to pay homage to her writing talent.

Destroy She Says (Professor Kliq Remix)

Composed and recorded from January 2014 to May 2015 using Ableton Live and Push, NI Komplete Ultimate 9, a Teenage Engineering OP-1, a fully-restored Moog Rogue, Maschine, and a Zoom H4n for recording various hand-played percussion, all on a 15" MacBook Pro.

This was a real bitch... I couldn't seem to get my hands on a full, legitimate acapella of this track, but I was determined to at least make something based around the original. I had premeditated the whole thing a few months in advance, namely about a month before the end of my last semester in college. In Orchestration, we always had the opportunity to write a short piece of our own for the ensembles to play at the various workshops. I was already working on this instrumental and wrote out some stuff for a string and woodwind octet, recorded it and incorporated it (however sparingly) into this track.

This track was fully commissioned by a good friend and generous donor, Bill Jagnow. A veteran of the horrors of music school, Bill gave me a few solid pep-talk emails and it always helped a shit load... so I was really determined to give this one everything I had. Bill, I hope you like it.

I had to go on a business trip for work that was actually a road trip. I started this in the back seat while we were driving through the sticks at night. I don't know what this is.
