We’re pleased to welcome back Toronto, Canada’s anthéne in the form of this collaborative album with UK cellist and composer Simon McCorry. Between them, they have released solo recordings on labels such as Home Normal, Archives, Past Inside The Present, Naviar and Fallen Moon. They’ve also both released on Polar Seas, a label helmed by Brad Deschamps, the man behind anthéne.

Both artists are comfortable collaborators, having worked alongside the likes of Ian Hawgood, Andrew Tasselmyer and Andrew Heath. It was in 2020 when their remote recording sessions translated into The Equation Of Time, combining and processing Brad’s guitar and Simon’s cello into a collage of droning textures. A concept sprang from their work together, during the unfolding pandemic and its resulting lockdowns, where time itself seemed to stand still, go backwards and go forwards, all at once. Add to this the the sheer geographical distance and time zones separating these artists, the often-explored artistic muse of time and space became the central theme.

The title ‘The Equation Of Time’ relates to the differences between the day of the earliest sun rise, the day of the latest sunset, the longest day. Each of these days are different, noted by the ancient Greeks and the Persians before them. The enormity of time and the ability for humans to occupy the same space as multiple predecessors is particularly fascinating when faced with something ancient, such as a cave painting, a forest or the ruins of a fallen civilisation. The track titles are aptly borrowed from parts of T.S. Eliot’s 4 Quartets, which also deals with the contemplation of time. You can surmise from these poems that ideally, one would focus only on the present, in order to make the most of each turn of the clock; the past cannot be altered and the future is unknown. Our memory can subconsciously serve us back our own recollection of past times, which can result in nostalgia, melancholy or both. Our minds can also influence our perception of the future, with feelings of either fear, excitement or both.

The Equation Of Time grapples at these themes and ideas without the intention of ever truly being able to define time. A wash of faded memories, unknowns and current thoughts stir into one-another; ambient music itself always seems so able to reflect and evoke a sense of wonder, at things far bigger than we can ever comprehend.

One day a ball of feathers fell from the sky. Pre-Aztec Mexica goddess Coatlicue tucked the feathers into her belt and their power impregnated her. Her daughter Coyolxauhqui was shocked by the pregnancy and sought support from her brothers. The child within her womb consoled Coatlicue, already aware of the betrayal. Coatlicue gave birth to Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec war god. He slew his sister and a grieving Coatlicue placed Coyolxauhqui's head in the night sky where it becomes the moon. Huitzilopochtli's birth represents the sun fighting off darkness. Just like a snake, Coatlicue holds secrets of life and death.

We witness the collapse of political and social systems with rotten roots, a dismantling of identities, an exposure of deep collective traumas. We are urged to look death in the eye and reframe our realities. Coatlicue may be turned to as the goddess of mourning. We need her to slow us down so that the psyche can process previous experiences. Sitting in your wounds you realize that the wounds you carry are not only yours, but also of the entire ancestral web of those who have been here before you. A web that also supports your feet, nourishes and provides the strength necessary to continue the daily fight. Coatlicue grants us the courage for self-definition as a rejection of colonization. To move forward it is necessary to look back and honor your forebear’s resistance, wisdom, knowledge, heal the relationship with your land and your history. Tending your wounds, you are your ancestors. Their pain and power.

Um dia, uma bola de penas caiu do céu. A deusa Mexicana pré-asteca Coatlicue enfiou as penas no cinto e seus poderes a impregnaram. Sua filha Coyolxauhqui ficou chocada com a gravidez e procurou o apoio de seus irmãos. A criança em seu ventre consolou Coatlicue, já ciente da traição. Coatlicue deu à luz a Huitzilopochtli, o deus da guerra asteca. Ele matou sua irmã e Coatlicue, enlutada, colocou a cabeça brilhante de Coyolxauhqui no céu noturno, e ele se tornou a lua. O nascimento de Huitzilopochtli representa o sol lutando contra a escuridão. Assim como uma cobra, Coatlicue guarda os segredos da vida e da morte.

Estamos testemunhando o colapso dos sistemas políticos e sociais de raízes podres, o desmantelamento de identidades, a exposição de traumas profundos que envolvem o coletivo. Hoje somos forçados a olhar nos olhos da morte e reformular nossa realidade. Neste momento muito desafiador, Coatlicue pode se transformar na deusa do luto. Uma perda associada a um passado traumático leva à necessidade do luto. Precisamos diminuir o ritmo para que a psique possa processar experiências anteriores. Pensar nos seus traumas faz com que você perceba que as feridas que você sofre e carrega não são apenas suas, mas também de toda a teia ancestral daqueles que estiveram aqui antes de você. Essa é a teia que também apoia seus pés, nutre e fornece a força necessária para continuar a luta diária. Coatlicue nos concede a coragem da autodefinição como uma rejeição à colonização. Para avançar, é necessário olhar para trás e honrar a resistência, a sabedoria, o conhecimento de seu antepassado, curar o relacionamento com sua terra e sua história. Cuidando de suas feridas, você é seus ancestrais, sua dor e seu poder.
