While getting her oil changed at an auto body shop, Carly had a profound encounter. The older man fixing her vehicle starting opening up about how his life had recently changed. He’d spent many years estranged from his kids, holding on to a deep resentment. One day, he spontaneously decided to go to a temple, and the rabbi spotted the new face in the crowd. After the service, the rabbi asked the old man to talk. The conversation made the man feel so seen that he decided to call his children and start making amends. Tears streamed down the mans face as he shared his story with Carly, and she wrote “New Tricks” on her drive home. It’s a soulful, bluesy, pop anthem with some southern Dobro twang. “New Tricks” is here to remind us that our stories aren’t finished, and you can teach an old dog new tricks.
