Beyond the horizon... Across the Ocean...

The ocean — both wild and calm, dangerous and beautiful — is made up of majesty and mystery, and it is indeed a force of nature we stood in awe. While we may appear very small to such greatness of the ocean, human endeavors and emotions can be powerful. Beyond the horizon of the sea, we may have someone dear to one's heart. Especially during this stressful year, it's important to reflect on all of the kinship, blessings, and emotions you miss. So I wrote this piece of music and made this clip, dedicating it to all the people who love the ocean and miss their loved ones who may be missing you across the ocean.

Across the Ocean

"Grandmother Mago" is a mythical figure from the Korean folk tale who created all of nature and the geographical formations of this universe.
Reenacting this Korean Genesis, the team merges the Korean tradition and innovation, hoping to find the next direction for the Korean arts and performance. 

한국 전통의 마고할미 설화는 옛 한국인이 바라본 세상의 시작을 담고 있다. 전통의 마고할미 이야기와 현대적 공연 기법의 만남, 한국적인 비주얼과 첨단 기술의 만남, 바라보기만 했던 하늘과 탐험하는 우주의 만남. 그 만남들의 사이에서 일어날 상승작용을 통해 한국적 공연예술의 다음 발걸음을 바라본다.

Squid Game OST - Way Back Then Gugak Cover (Traditional Korean Instruments)

On the afternoon of July 15, 2021, anyone in Seoul, Korea may remember the double rainbow in the pink sky that was widely seen throughout the area. Inspired by the color and joy I felt by the rainbow at that time, I wanted to compose music that is warm and peaceful.
The music was featured as the OST for the short film <Rainbow Rainbow> by Kang Taeu who is an actor and director. This is also the very first album in my life that is released through a distributor. Just like life doesn't fold as the way I wanted, there are times when I can't show my work to the public. However, I was able to mature a little by little, as a music director as well as a person who loves movies and music with a content heart.
After the hard work, many of us found ourselves exhausted physically and mentally. It is Michael’s wish that his music can soothe such feelings and give you a little bit of peace of mind.

2021년 7월 15일 오후, 수도권 전역에 크게 보였던 분홍빛 하늘에 쌍무지개를 혹시 기억하시나요? 그때 무지개에서 보았던 색 그리고 느낀 희열에 영감받아 맘이 편안해지는 음악을 작곡했습니다.
배우이자 감독인 강태우님의 단편영화 <무지개 무지개>의 OST가 되었고, 올해 배급사를 통해 발매된 저의 인생 첫 앨범입니다. 내 맘대로 쉽게 되지 않는 인생처럼, 영화음악 작업을 하다 보면 간혹 마음껏 작품을 보여주지 못할 때가 있지만, 그 기간을 통해서 조금이나마 음악감독으로서, 그리고 영화와 음악을 사랑하는 한 사람으로서 성숙해질 수 있었습니다.
열심히 살다 보면 심적으로 지칠 때가 있는데, 그러한 마음을 달래주고, 여유와 안식을 조금이나마 느낄 수 있도록 마이클의 안녕을 음악을 통해 전합니다.

Inspired by gameplay of Kingdom Hearts Series, the music was composed based on the narritive of the game. 
In the game, there is a main hero named, Sora, who is a keyblade master that travles to different world of fantasy and save them from the darkness.
In this piece, I tried to capture an essence of mystery, valiancy and unexpected danger.

What Lies Beneath

Another collaboration with Hoseo University Animation Department. This time it was all about spreading words of proper etiquette for the school library. The animation shows a comical narrative of this main character who is under the immense pressure of study. It turns out he cannot resist the temptation of music, and break out inner feelings where he dances with his imaginary friends and his classmates in the middle of the library.

"Celles et Ceux des Cimes et Cieux" is a form of a trailer for a fantasy animation. 
An astray, young boy from the village of Giant Tree meets two unlikely companions who will help him to go back home. They go through many dangers and wonders together. Would they able to find a way to the Village of Giant Tree? Perhaps, there will be another great, and heroic tale to come.

With an approval by Gwenn Germain, the animator of the "Celles et Ceux des Cimes et Cieux," the rescoring the animation project was one of the exciting projects that I have done so far.

Also, the Hollywood Music Workshop provided the amazing opportunity to record this project. The work was recorded in the Synchron Stage, one of the world-class studios for the scoring, along with a team of Hollywood experts and Vienna Musicians, the entire session was a success.

Finally, my deep gratitude to Mr. Germain for his permission, and the entire faculty of Hollywood Music Workshop and the Synchron Stage who supported and led the recording session successfully.

Celles et Ceux des Cimes et Cieux (Rescore)

This piece is inspired by series of the Korean folk music such as the Chestnut Song (군밤타령), Nyl-lee-lee-ya(늴리리야), and Arirang (아리랑). These songs have been practiced and sang for a long time, bringing people together, relishing a good harvest, and celebrating a harmonious nature and spirit.

However, Korea is now separated into two, communist North Korea, and republic South Korea, divided and victimized by the political and historical reasons, both nations share the pain of separation and broken families. 

However, it is my strong belief that our proud Korean spirit still remains, and it still on-going determination for both nations to be reunited and rejoice the harmony once we shared.

By composing Korean melody with the orchestral palette, it is my sincere hope for all Korean people, to honor the good spirit, cherish the heritage, and spread the goodwill which can influence people all around the world as well.

Los Angeles Film Conducting Intensive (LAFCI) is a workshop to train art of conducting and provide an education and resources to help media composers succeed on the podium. A team of great faculties was there to teach such as Angeles Velez, Conrad Pope, William Ross, Jorge Mester, Emilie Bernstein, and Carl Rydlund, a Hollywood's best professionals who have a long history of film-music production experiences. Each one of them there to train, discipline, influence, and encourage for all of the LAFCI participants.

As a 2019 LAFCI fellow, I was privileged to compose, conduct, and record my personal work at the Eastwood Recording Stage, Burbank, USA. It will remain as one of my memorable experiences, and I would highly recommend this workshop for those who wish to improve their art of conducting and work ethics as a film, media, and game composer.

Intro

Mother, Flower (2019), is a story of a woman who is struggling after a few months of delivering her first baby. Soo, the protagonist, is forced to leave her work because of her depression and having a hard transitional state as the mother of a newborn child. Director Eunhye Hong Kim wanted to talk about the Postpartum depression through her short film where a 
natural mother's love", which is forcefully expected to new moms. These social expectations are the source of guilt, confusion, and further despondency of new mothers, and they are not side effects of traditional norms of mother or women, but rather a human condition.

It was an exciting experiment and process to see how sounds that tend to define as masculine can reflect the feminine character in the norms of psychology. The uses of ambient audios and recorded traditional instruments like Theorbo and Classical guitar, which were performed by Brandon Jak Acker, came to the creation of a soundtrack which a sense of hopelessness, perplexity, and emotional compulsion was a theme. Ultimately, it was our wishes that our music can reflect the young mothers' state of mind, and such a topic discussed beyond the norms of gender.

Title: Brother Tiger (호랑이형님)

San-goon, a powerful tiger who swore to protect the children of his old master. Despite his prowess, he could not stop the imminent evil, threatening the balance and tranquility of the world. To ensure the safety of the children, and the new hope for peace, San-goon fights for the noble deeds, even if costs his life. 

Brother Tiger (호랑이형님) is a graphic novel written by Sang Gyu Lee (이상규) from South Korea. It presents many mythical creatures, deities, and demons which have an origin from Korea, Manchuria, China, and Mongal, narrates an epic tale of our heroes with an authentic cultural portrayal.

Inspired by this magnificent saga, my latest composition shaped around by the tale of San-goon, the noble and loyal tiger, where many of leitmotifs and musical texture have the oriental spirit.

Brother Tiger (호랑이형님)

Born in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, Michael W. Choi is a Korean-American composer, conductor, and filmmaker specialized in writing music for film, animation, games, and new media.

He graduated from the Berklee College of Music: Valencia Campus, receiving a Master's degree in Scoring for Film, Television, and Video Games. His skills include musical composition, arrangement, orchestration, conducting, mixing, and experience in film production skills. He worked with independent directors and artists in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He co-founded a student film production group called KUT Film Production, directing and producing short feature films.

He is currently based in Seoul, South Korea, working as a professional producer, music director, and composer for film, animation, video games, and new media.
