CERCANDO I COLORI (Adattamento della poesia "Agonia", da “Le poesie aggiunte”, in “Lavorare stanca”, Einaudi, Torino, 1998, Cesare Pavese). I versi di Cesare Pavese che stai per leggere hanno un titolo, Agonia, che è in antitesi con ciò che vogliono esprimere. Parlano di rinascita, parlano di speranza e di colori. Quei colori che non piangono, quelli che sono come un risveglio, quelli che la ragazza-protagonista cercherà uscendo per la strada.


Girerò per le strade 
finché non sarò stanca morta

saprò vivere sola 
e fissare negli occhi
ogni volto che passa
e restare la stessa.

Questo fresco che sale
a cercarmi le vene
è un risveglio 
che mai nel mattino ho provato

Girerò per le strade

Da domani la gente
riprende a vedermi
e sarò ritta in piedi 
e potrò soffermarmi
e specchiarmi in vetrine.

La magra bambina che fui
si è svegliata da un pianto
durato per anni
ora è come quel pianto 
non fosse mai stato

Girerò per le strade 
finché non sarò stanca morta

E desidero solo colori.
I colori non piangono,
sono come un risveglio:
domani i colori
torneranno, 
assieme ai miei blues. 

Ciascuna uscirà per la strada,
ogni corpo un colore.
Questo corpo vestito
di rosso leggero
dopo tanto pallore 
riavrà la sua vita.

Sentirò intorno a me
scivolare gli sguardi
e saprò d’esser io: 
gettando un’occhiata,
mi vedrò tra la gente.

I’ll walk the streets
until I’m dead tired.

I’ll learn to live alone,
to look straight
into every passing face
and still remain myself.

This cool breath
rising through my veins
is an awakening
I’ve never felt before.

I’ll walk the streets
until I’m dead tired.

Tomorrow, people
will see me again.
I’ll stand upright,
stop for a moment,
and see my face reflected
in the shop windows.

The thin girl I once was
has awakened from a weeping
that lasted for years.
Now it’s as if that weeping
had never been.

I’ll walk the streets
until I’m dead tired.

Now I only wish for colors.
Colors do not cry —
they are like an awakening.
Tomorrow the colors
will return,
along with my blues.

Each woman will walk the streets,
each body a color.
This body dressed
in soft red
after so much pallor
will live again.

I’ll feel around me
the sliding of glances,
and I’ll know it’s me —
just by a glance,
I’ll see myself
