I wrote “Alone in the Dark” in August 2025, and it was one of the first tracks I uploaded to Suno. I was strumming “A Slight Return” by the Bluetones on my guitar while half-watching TV when I stumbled on a set of chords I liked. The vocal melody came to me almost instantly — once I sang the line “Alone in the Dark”, the rest of the lyrics and melody flowed naturally. The chorus felt like a seamless step from the verse, and within about three minutes, the whole song was written. My partner Rachel helped me shape the second verse into more of a story (something I’m not always great at), and I uploaded my original Apple Voice Memo recording to Suno for production. What you hear here on SoundCloud is the finished result.

I love the female vocals Suno added, especially the layering in the choruses. It lifts the track and hints at the kind of atmosphere I’d like to develop further. To take it to the next level, I think it would need real-world production to fully capture that depth and richness.

This Town (Mix 1.1)

I first wrote “Share” back in 1999 while playing in my local band Kerisan. We gigged around Colchester, Essex — venues like The Oliver Twist — and also in my hometown of Halstead when we were just a three-piece. This song was never played live, but it did make it onto the only demo we ever recorded.

The original version was just me and an acoustic guitar. At the time, I was listening a lot to Subcircus, and I even tried to emulate the singer’s voice — something that makes me laugh now, but when you’re young, imitation is how you learn. My voice sounds rough on that early recording, but the song itself has always stayed with me.

Share (Mix 1.1)

Broken Symphony came to life around 2015/2016 — one of those songs that just appeared naturally while I was strumming my guitar late one night. It instantly reminded me of a Grant Lee Buffalo intro, which became its inspiration. I recorded the idea straight onto my iPhone with Voice Memos: a verse and a half of a chorus that I couldn’t quite piece together at the time. Years later, while scrolling through old recordings, I stumbled across it again and was drawn back in — this time finishing the chorus.

A folk-tinged song with a simplicity and flow that always reminded me of Grant Lee Buffalo.

Broken Symphony (Mix 1.4)

I wrote “Two to the Thorn” around 2002, and it featured on the first demos by The Blue and the Blind. The original recording was a live take on acoustic guitar with an overdubbed piano outro. I’ve always liked the song but felt the performance and mix could be stronger, so I’ve wanted to revisit it for a long time. This Suno version captures much of the atmosphere of that early recording, and I’ll probably record a new performance myself in the future — it’s still one of my favourites.

What I’ve always loved about this track is its atmosphere — the lyrics, the mood, and the way it carries a haunting, almost profound presence every time I perform it.
