Harp Duet is a sequence of poems by Phoebe Power with electronic music by Michael Hedges. In the live performance, digital samplers, audio recordings and midi software accompany both pre-recorded and live versions of the poems.

Some of the sounds are not from a harp, but from a piano which was wrecked in the floods of winter 2015. With the wooden side of the upright piano removed, recordings were made of the metal strings inside.

'somebody found me' was developed from archive tape recordings of conversations with the writer’s grandmother. Christl was found abandoned as a baby in Austria, and came to live in England after marrying a British soldier in 1946. In the spirit of modernist methods of appropriation and collage, fragments of Christl’s voice have been carefully assembled to reveal salient meanings around issues of war, sex, family and displacement. These comments are juxtaposed with a contemporary response in the form of Phoebe’s original poems, exploring the transmission of ideas and feelings between generations. The material of the past is thereby retrieved by its (re)presentation in a new form. Through an engagement with the recording technologies of modernity, including the processes of digitisation and computer editing, our piece reclaims the affective trace of an individual which might otherwise be lost.
