You know that feeling you get when you're driving down a back road and you look out into the middle of  a field and there's an old, abandoned little house with the windows long broken, weeds growing through the walls, maybe a tree growing through the kitchen, and you think, “I wonder who lived there...what their story was...that was a new house once” and your mind just kind of goes to that place and you get that feeling. Or maybe you're standing in an ancient Cathedral somewhere in Spain and you just feel small...and infinite… and you have that longing for something that was but is no more, in this world of form at least. That's where this song came from. When Sierra Noble and I wrote this we both said it felt like someone else was telling their story through us. We wrote in a very old, historic house in Tennessee which is said to be haunted by an old couple who lived there in the 1800's. I have no idea how all that works, but I swear there was an intense vibe there that day and there was indeed a story wanting to be told.

Human After All (feat. Ruby Amanfu)

I wrote this one with a dear friend of mine named Jennifer Hanson. A deeply personal song for both of us, it was one of those important days when you do your best to set aside any awareness of the outside world and just be honest, be honest, be honest. "To gain your own voice, you have to forget about having it heard" – Allen Ginsberg. I truly believe that. The initial thought, “you're breaking your own heart”, smacked me across the face while I was sitting at a red light on Wedgewood and 8th Ave in Nashville near Grimey's Used Music. It hit me like a lightning bolt. Such an obvious idea, but I'd never heard it said quite like that. The next day I was writing with Jennifer and after talking for a few hours about life in general I suddenly realized this idea was exactly what we were talking about. We wrote the song and a few weeks later Kelly Clarkson heard it and recorded it, which was a shock. She put it on her album, Stronger and I love what she did with it. It was so rewarding to see a song which came from such a pure, uncommercial place go on to connect in a larger context and with an artist we both have tremendous respect for.  Kudos, Mr. Ginsberg.

Breaking Your Own Heart

Nothing can knock you on your ass quite like Love. Just about all of us have been blind-sided by the inconvenient, ill-timed, perfectly miserable condition of falling in love. And it's often just after you've determined that it's just not for you in general, that it hits you the hardest. That's the idea out of which this song was born and I had a blast writing it and recording it. Recording the gang vocals, which are always a good time, was especially fun on this one. It's tough to have a bad day (or keep a straight face) when you're standing around a mic with a bunch of friends yelling, “Here comes love”, at the top of your lungs.

Ready Or Not

Written out of darkness, personal struggle and a resolve to move toward a better place, St. Christopher, named metaphorically for the patron saint of travel, is truly about a journey, the beginning of a journey at least. It's about the quiet resolve to begin moving out of the difficult place you've been, towards something new. A half-whispered prayer for help along the way.

It's so strange to be separated from each other at a time like this. I've been deeply moved by images of people holding up signs outside hospital windows to let their loved ones know they're still with them. I finished writing this for those of us (and I think it's all of us), who have people out there in the world they can't be with right now due to quarantine, that they're concerned about.
