Those who already know the production of Curiosity Music will surely notice the come-back of their godfather, Alexi Delano, who had paved the way for all projects of the Parisian label. After Lodestar Bang, the excellent first EP published by CM, the Chilean producer comes back with Scottish upcoming talent Michael L Penman. The duo delivers Realm of Resistance, a first EP composed of three original tracks as well as a groovy Techno remix of the German Wigbert. Uncompromising, electric and powerful tracks to launch 2019, to be discovered from February 4 exclusively on Beatport and February 18 on all platforms.

Sometimes a chance meeting is enough to create a friendship. Four years ago, in London, Alexi Delano and Michael L Penman met thanks to a common friend: the Techno maestro Ambivalent, also known as LA4A. “At the time, I already knew of Michael’s music and he had also just released an EP with Ambivalent that I had been playing out for a while. We connected instantly and soon started talking about music and geeked out about studio gear. A few months later, we managed to jump in to the studio,” recalls Alexi.

This first collaboration gave birth to four tracks from 30 to 45 minutes in one session! In the creation of this project, the two friends simply let themselves be carried away by their passion and subconscious: 

“We had no structure or plans to the session: just plug in the gear and see what happens. Things just seemed to click in place over the session without any really need to force the idea, it just seemed to develop on its own and guide us rather than the other way around,” recalls Michael. “I think a lot of the soundscapes came subconsciously – at least to me that is – from watching Stranger Things and the atmosphere and vision was of walking through that dark forest and the warped emotive sounds you would hear and/or feel,” adds Alexi. Sharing the same approach, the Chilean and the Scot did not even have to exchange a single word during the recording. The result is these tracks with an apocalyptic, lunar, mysterious atmosphere and a sharp groove. The electric sounds echo distant voices on an uncompromising beat. “The titles just came to us while listening back to the tracks a few days later. We didn’t realize that we had used such dark and sinister soundscapes.”

The three original tracks of the duo come with the incisive remix of the Germany’s Wigbert. Rising value of the European scene, the protégé of the great Dubfire has proven itself on stage – one should remember in particular his live performance of April 15, 2017 in Paris, organized by Curiosity Music – and through its many EP and remixes, thanks to an energetic and particularly chiselled sound.

For their part, Alexi Delano and Michael L Penman have other plans in mind for 2019: “I hope that we both can hit the studio again soon. I think that musically we have a lot more to express. I am also prepping the upcoming vinyl releases of my own label AD Limited, which is very exciting!” Alexi says. “I have been multisampling my gear for Abletunes, mixing and mastering some great ambient Trap for a great up and coming artist called Navdeep and doing some RnB with a rapper friend of mine. All this takes me out my comfort zone and gives be new ideas and skills I can take into my music. And speaking of that, I have a release in 2019 on Smiley Fingers!” conclude Michael. In the meantime, their Realm of Resistance EP is to be discovered from February 4 exclusively on Beatport and February 18 on all other platforms.

Having found a very fruitful collaborative friendship, Michael L Penman and Ambivalent (aka Kevin McHugh) have begun exploring the intersection of their approaches to music-making. They originally connected when Kevin discovered Michaels music in 2010 . After playing many of his productions in his DJ sets and including them in a mix-CD (_ground) release for Minus, Kevin made contact and the pair began exchanging files and swapping ideas. This led to time in the studio together and yet more file exchanges. Quickly a natural creative balance emerged as they found that their production techniques were complementary as is their shared love of groove, bass and musicality. For their Ovum debut the duo have delivered a trio of tracks that have those three elements at their core. Title track Shimmer brings together raw jackin funk with a warm driving bassline and scything techy stabs whilst Chevalier matches its fun bouncy groove with an infectious and spritely melody. Final track Memogram comes heavy with the oldskool, delivering a bed of beats and samples beneath the very heaviest of acid-kicks. Not for the feint of heart! Michael is a creative and ambitious music producer and sound designer from Scotland. He has travelled across the globe for many years, working in the music industry in the likes of Los Angeles, London and Berlin.
 
Michael has developed his sound and technique by taking huge influences from his ever changing surroundings. This has helped him mould together a distinctive sound. Whether it is his funky minimal extracts or the rolling late hour tech house, Michael embodies a sound that helps to intertwine with your body and mind, creating a true listening experience.
 
This talent has seen him release a number of hits on Slovakian minimal label Leporelo. With each track possessing bouncy catchy bass lines, slamming drums and a wide array of glitched out percussion and effects. These delightful little morsels soon tickled the taste buds of M-nus artist Ambivalent, which soon saw the him  chart  “Greasy Love” in his October Glass Half Full Chart.
 
And it wasn't too long till Michael attracted other top DJ’s. The likes of Richie Hawtin and Dubfire started to play a selection of Michael tracks across 2011 and 2012. This lead onto Richie using Michael’s track “Wa” his essential mix on Pete Tong Radio 1 show.

Michael's music is getting getting support from people such as Richie Hawtin, Huxley, Josh Wink, Adam Beyer, Gregor Tresher, Kenny Larkin, Dan Curtin, Anja Schneider, Nicole Moudaber, Yousef and many more.
