Each year, we ask a few artists from our Dekmantel Selectors line-up to deliver a mix in anticipation of the new edition. First up in this year’s series is Garage Noord resident and LYL radio show host @merelrhizoom. As a proper connoisseur of modular synth tracks and avant-garde compositions, merel rhizoom tends to navigate the musical stratosphere between what one could refer to as “weird psybient”, hypnotic jungle, trance downtempo or industrial breaks with implausible ease in her selections.

The mix at hand makes a good case for doing what feels right: merel rhizoom told us that she “initially was very tempted to make a more dance-oriented mix”, but then decided to go into a different direction: “focussing on (modular) synthesis of veterans such as Max Loderbauer, Robert Aiki Low, Andreas Tilliander and Driftmachine, while on the other hand including more avant-garde compositions by Jon Hassell, Oren Ambarchi, Upperground Orchestra and others”. What already sounds good on paper, has turned out to be a mesmerizing and thoroughly mind-altering listening session – enjoy it with your eyes closed and mind open.

Happy to present this month Behrang Mohammadi, a versatile DJ and producer who constantly seeks to expand his already extensive skill set.

Differing from the typical electronic selector, he boasts a diverse musical palette and delights in surprising the dance floor with unique combinations and golden oddities. Mohammadi is a breath of fresh air in the European club scene, where he embraces everything from mainstream hits to obscure tracks. 

Known as the founder of the Berlin-Malmö club initiative "TTNoTDB" and a co-founder of "Spazio Records", he has played a pivotal role in shaping the electronic music scene in southern Sweden for over a decade. Currently, he is a cherished resident DJ at "Inkonst" and is making his mark in the vibrant Berlin club scene. Mohammadi's presence highlights the growing demand for skillful playfulness in today's dance music landscape.

This is a mix of entirely original music Jen reached out a few months ago to tell us she had a transcendent experience with a voyages mix and since then she has been working on a mix for us to return the favor. Safe to say she nailed the brief. It is a stunning invitation into an emotional and loving space.

JENLI said this:

"Here it is and a bit of background.

Alex and I just did IVF here in Bangkok as the final effort in our trying to conceive (TTC) journey for the last 5 years. I have had a couple of complications and well, needless to say it has been a very difficult journey. IVF is a crazy process where after making a viable embryo you transfer it back to the mother. Then after the transfer is the dreaded two week wait (TWW) where you have to wait about 2 weeks to take a pregnancy test and see if your thousands of dollars and years of effort, finally, create a baby.

It has been 11 days and tomorrow is our pregnancy test, so I have been using this time (TTW) to compose this piece for Voyages.FM. Making this has gotten me through the TWW and will be marked as a time of contemplation, fear, healing, and hope.  No matter what the results, all will be ok.  

I hope you enjoy this composition which includes samples from all my travels with Alex, piano at our friends in Vancouver during covid lockdown, field recordings in Bangkok, Bali, Vancouver Island and in the jungles of Bukit lawang, Sumatra, and a poem from Penny Joy (my mother in law which is also featured in JoyLi's track "Trust the Molecules". Cover art is a photo I took of a window within a window from the rooftop here.

I will also be releasing my own album this year, so if being a mom isnt my purpose, creating music will continue to be."

Solid Steel (10th February) In Hour 1 we hand over to you the legendary MJ Cole, who has been producing for two decades and was a leading figure on the UK Garage scene, gaining chart success and working with a host of artists from Elisabeth Troy to Wiley and more recently AJ Tracey. His mix for Solid Steel shows another side to his musical tastes with a beautiful set taking in music from the likes of Jon Hopkins, Nils Frahm, Floating Points, Steve Reich, Radiohead and Bonobo , plus some of his own productions. DJ and producer Malcolm came to our attention through his tastefully curated label, Global Warming Records, a platform that are making the end of the world sound just as they like it — just how we like it too.

Since starting the imprint Malcolm has brought friends and new producers into the fold, the likes of Ouai Stéphane, N-ERGY, Jon Beige and Sutja Gutierrez, who have all showcased their own take on dub-wise atmospherics, dystopian bass experiments and heavy syncopated rhythms.

Freshly moved from Paris to London (literally - he got off the plane a couple of days ago), Malcolm brings a touch of the dystopian and cinematic to his own productions too, which have landed on labels like Abstrack and Biologic.

Not one to churn out mixes regularly, he's prepared something very special for us. Weaving together obscurities and unreleased edits finished especially for this, Malcolm shares the moods and sounds at the core of what he does.
