Q. How would you describe yourself?

A. a question mark


Q. How long have you been a part of the NYC music scene?

A. long enough. i’ve been living in NY my whole life. i grew up on long island. 
my adventures in that scene going to punk and hardcore shows are another story for another time but, more recently i'd commute for nights out in brooklyn and the city every weekend, often meeting the sunrise on my return trips. 
starting around dubstep days for the programming at webster hall, eventually finding the rave & underground scenes... 
anything happening in industrial or atypical venues in Brooklyn captured my attention. 
i miss parties like lit city rave, #top8 and s!ck magic.. 
memories of going to 285 kent, the wick, steel drums and more spots without names are still pretty vivid. 

around that time i'd also been put onto bossa nova civic club by following lineups which would eventually become a very big part of my own story as i graduated from patron to dj. 
there was recently a fire which has affected the building, its tenants and the team. there's a fund active if you are able to contribute :)

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.

A. it’s super chill jungle vibes straight thru featuring tracks from 1992 to 2022.
coming from legendary labels that championed this genre such as moving shadow, good looking, limited e edition... and a newer imprint - 8205 recordings which is focused on previously unreleased 90's hardcore and jungle.
it feels like one of my more personal collages of sounds out to date as jungle along with many other forward uk genres were pretty integral to my childhood..
i’d burn cd’s and make curated mini discs for myself to enjoy as a hobby
though my interest in the history and the figures in the scene was far more passive at the time..

this mix gives great context to two recently released productions —
my remix of ‘volshebno stretched’ by anastasia kristensen which is a fusion of jungle, techno and club
and the original self-released ‘elevation’ which draws heavily from atmospheric influence (like ltj) even through its title.

i'd also like to share this review of 'elevation' with you all..

John Plaza - DJ/producer from Chile, he's been producing his own tracks for the last 2 years. His style is built around blending active percussions with minimal ambient sounds & enveloping hypnotic passages. Through this combination he aims to create a trip both mental & physical. Van Morph is a restless spirit that has been around since the early 90's as a clubber but also as a listener. In the mid 90's his love for electronic music brought him close to the desire to learn the art of DJing. With this initiation, he officially began his journey in the field of the music industry . He is Co-Owner / Founder of the record Labels Khoros Records, Eurynome Records and Chronos Records, continues to this day to share his musical concerns since music for him is a way of life, a choice that has determined to this day his course so far. His style changes and reshapes from time to time and that does not make him boring.
His music is characterized by dancing bass lines and psychedelic accompaniments while other times his dub mood with various percussions and melodies show the other side of him.

Shaped by the unique and picturesque region of rolling hills and deep beech forests, where it's not uncommon to spot a lone hunter or hear the distant call of a deer, and where the rain can linger for days, even weeks, before it finally begins to fall. Her keen sensitivity to sound, fascination with nature, reverence for vast spaces, and passion for movement all echo through the sets she creates. Each track is a vibrant blend of soul and electronic energy, infused with the essence of dub music and grounded in deep techno. She is part of the Space and @velvetvortexx collectives based in Wrocław, curated by @aksamit-music. Their mission is to elevate and share the highest standards of electronic music with the public.

Waves of pulsing, layered techno from the revered Mala Junta resident.

If the electronic music industry is caught in the crosshairs of a battle over what makes for true techno, then D.Dan is one of the underground's great modern emissaries.

A figurehead from the new guard of DJs to arise in the '20s, the Berlin-based artist and Mala Junta resident is an ambassador for a sound that is strongly anchored in the classic roots of techno. His productions, like his mixes, are revved-up takes on the hypnotic wormholes that defined dance floors last decade, but with a fresh (and high BPM) millennial twist. 

Originally from Seattle, D.Dan became enamoured with the spectral stylings of psych rock and shoegaze in adolescence. It's not difficult to see how the cosmic tapestry of bands like Cocteau Twins became a blueprint for the entrancing music he's gone on to make as an adult. His releases on Mutant Future and summerpup are latticeworks of loops and layered percussion, custom-tooled for lost hours on the dance floor and drawn-out mixes behind the decks. 

This approach directly extends into his DJ practice, where he pairs song selections from contemporaries that mirror his own reduced, controlled approach to techno. RA.994 is a Grade A display of contemporary four-to-the-floor from flagbearers like Roll Dann and Marcal.

And like D.Dan's standalone records, his RA Podcast finds room for sweetness—the intermittent peal of an open clap, the steady ripening of a chord—while ultimately emphasising the beauty of function and form over flair.
